The announcements came as we were finishing preparing this issue of
Alternative libertaire: 1,254 layoffs at Michelin, which wants to closeits factories in Vannes and Cholet, and 2,400 at Auchan, which is
talking about a "deep restructuring". ---- For Auchan, this is, among
other things, the consequence of government decisions that have wanted
neither to touch salaries nor to control price inflation, mechanically
leading to a drop in consumption. It is difficult to hold the same
discourse for Michelin, which recorded 2 billion in profits in 2023 and
plans to resume its share buyback policy in 2026 to the tune of one
billion euros, an operation whose sole purpose is to increase its stock
price to flatter shareholders, the only priority of financialized
capitalism.
Contrary to what we may hear, these layoff plans are perfectly
avoidable. They are the result of deliberate capitalist policies,
putting the profits of a few shareholders and private pension funds
before the lives of workers.
Blocking dividends, regaining robust unemployment insurance, reducing
working hours with corresponding hiring, requisitioning/self-management
of companies that close, workers' right of veto... The fight against
layoffs must be done through the redistribution of wealth, and be an
opportunity to challenge arbitrary employer control.
