1300 people took to the streets of Osnabrück today in solidarity with Rojava and the uprising in Iran! We gave the following speech at the demonstration: ---- Since the Islamist rulers of Syria seized control of the Syrian regime, they have been using massive violence against minorities and political opponents with the support of their reactionary Turkish allies, perpetrating massacres of the population in Aleppo, targeting Kurds, Yazidis, Druze, and Alawites. Now their aim is to destroy Rojava and bring its inhabitants under their tyrannical rule.
These are not disputes, territorial claims, or mere conflicts over the distribution of power within the emerging state apparatus, as some German newspapers have reported. In Rojava, it is not simply a matter of two random competitors vying for political power. In Rojava, the possibility of a free, humane society clashes with Islamist state terror.
Rojava holds special significance for emancipatory people worldwide. There, under conditions of war and constant Turkish bombing since 2012, real achievements in women's liberation, secularization, and democratic self-organization have been fought for and defended. In 2015, fighters of the Kurdish-led People's and Women's Protection Units (YPG and YPJ) halted the advance of the Islamic State in Kobanê, ended the massacres of the Yazidis in Sinjar with their allies, and finally defeated IS as a territorial power in 2017 with the liberation of Raqqa.
Today Kobanê is once again besieged by Islamists; the population there is largely without electricity and water.
Today, due to the invasion of Islamist forces, the IS flag is once again flying over Raqqa.
Today, thousands of IS fighters are being freed from prisons captured by the Islamists.
Today, statues of YPJ fighters are being torn down by Islamist government forces.
Today, cemeteries where female fighters and martyrs for a better world rest are being destroyed by Islamists.
Today, the bodies of fallen soldiers and women fighting for their freedom are being abused by Islamists.
And the German government and the rest of the self-proclaimed Western community of values don't seem to mind. While in 2019 the German Foreign Minister had the utter audacity to claim the victory over ISIS for Germany as well, today the EU and Germany are openly collaborating with those who are freeing ISIS supporters from prisons. The hoped-for stable post-war order in Syria, to which deportations are finally supposed to resume, is a graveyard order that banishes women from public life and forces them, along with religious and ethnic minorities, to live in constant fear of Islamist violence.
Our goal is to put an end to this violence.
For us, it is about showing solidarity with and standing by the side of the people who are actively fighting the Islamist advance.
For us, it is about defending the existence of Rojava, the possibility of a better, a free, a humane world.
For weeks, an uprising against the mullah regime has been taking place in Iran. Triggered by the country's disastrous economic situation, the protests have spread into a widespread revolt against the rule of the ayatollahs. Large segments of the Iranian population desire freedom, secularism, and democratic structures. This uprising has been brutally suppressed, with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards firing indiscriminately at people from rooftops. The highest estimates put the death toll at 16,000. Even though some in the West are increasingly calling for the Shah's son and thus for the reintroduction of a brutal monarchy, the people of Iran yearn for freedom. This is clearly expressed in the slogan "No turban, no crowns." Here, too, we must stand with the people who are rising up against the bloody Iranian regime.
In this sense:
Jin, Jiyan, Azadi
Bijî Berxwedana Rojava
Bijî Berxwedana YPG
