While Iran is back on the international scene, Alternative Libertaire interviewed two
activists of the Communist Party workers of Iran (WPI). Shiva Mahbobi, feminist, for the
release of Iranian political prisoners, the rights of refugee-es, former political
prisoner ... And Taqvaee Hamid, who took part in 1978/1979, to the revolution to overthrow
the regime Shah, a leading player in the construction of the communist power and
worker-communist in Iran with Mansoor Hekmat and currently secretary of the WPI. ----
Alternative Libertaire: How did the Worker Communist Party of Iran (WPI)? How is it? ----
Hamid Taqvaee: The WPI was founded in 1991 as a radical Marxist response to the fall of
the USSR and the Eastern bloc. It was the result of a theoretical and political process to
articulate and clarify the differences between communism of the working class as a radical
critique of capitalism and the "mainstream communism" represented by the Soviet Union,
China and other types of "really existing socialism" which are in fact nothing but state
capitalism. In an interview entitled "Our differences" Mansoor Hekmat - leader,
theoretician and founder of WPI - clearly explains the theoretical and political
characteristics of worker-communism. I highly recommend it (to read on
Hekmat.public-archive.net ).
We are a revolutionary party in exile, with an underground organization in Iran and are in
direct connection with our activists. We exist on social networks, which are widely used
by political activists in Iran, and we use New Channel, a satellite television channel.
Hamid Taqvaee
Born in 1949, he participated in the 1979 Iranian revolution, and in 1983, with Mansoor
Hekmat, the foundation of the Union of Communist Militants became in 1991 the
Worker-communist Party of Iran. He is the secretary since 2003.
What relationship do you have with the Iranians in exile? What international solidarity
form is most useful to you?
Hamid Taqvaee: Our organization and abroad committee are very active. We have members and
organizations in many countries of Western Europe, North America, Japan, Australia and
Turkey. We organized and established many committees, campaigns and movements in these
countries such as the Federation of Iranian Refugees, the International Committee against
Execution, the International Committee against stoning, the Council of former Muslims,
Children First the Campaign against Sharia law in England, the Campaign for the release of
political prisoners in Iran (CFPP), the workers solidarity Network Middle East and North
Africa ...
Although our activities are mainly oriented towards Iran, we also fight against Islamism,
racism and anti-immigration policies in Western countries. We are particularly opposed to
post-modernism and cultural relativism are the dominant doctrines many liberal
organizations and "left" in Europe and North America. We believe international solidarity
is possible only by the class struggle against the austerity imposed by all governments,
against the ever widening gap between the ruling class (the 1% of the camp) and the masses
(the 99%), and against political Islam is an international threat brought on the political
scene by the United States and its allies after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Islamism and
political Islam are the results of the international economic crisis of the bourgeoisie.
What is the state of progressive forces left today? What are their relations with the
Kurds? What initiatives take?
Hamid Taqvaee: If you speak of the progressive forces in Iran and the region, I think that
fight the Islamic Republic and other Islamic forces in the Middle East (including its
direct and indirect support in the West) is their priority. Many parties and opposition
groups in Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Afghanistan and Syrian Kurdistan defend secularism against
Islamic governments and laws they impose on these countries. Our party plays a leading
role in this battle.
To the Kurdish question, in our case, we do not believe in the autonomy. This reinforces
the national and ethnic identity and perpetuates the differences between dominant and
autonomous nationalities, it is not a progressive option. We advocate equal rights for all
citizens, without distinction according to ethnicity, nationality or religion attributed
to them. Of course, if the oppressed people want to establish a new country, we recognize
their right.
In existing conditions, we recommend the separatism of Iraqi Kurdistan. Indeed, after the
invasion of the United States and their allies, the atrocities committed by Islamic forces
throughout the Middle East, not only are more likely to expect to enjoy equal rights
civilians in the near future in Iraq, but also the relations between Arabs and Kurds in
Iraq could deteriorate. An independent Kurdistan would help the working class and the
masses in Iraq and allow to fight for freedom, equality and prosperity in better
conditions. Iran of course, the situation is completely different. The fight against the
central government of the Islamic Republic unifies the different peoples.
What about the social movement in general? We know that the arrests, convictions, torture
and killings by the regime have not stopped ...
Hamid Taqvaee: The Islamic regime of Iran is one of the most brutal and barbaric in modern
history. He holds the record number of executions in the world, the torture of inmates are
and murder of Opponents are still common. But he was never able to silence the people.
Women, young people, especially the workers in Iran have not ceased to denounce the
deprivation of rights, poverty and repression imposed on the company.
Despite the repression, the women of Iran are actively fighting apartheid equality,
Islamic misogyny. Young people are fighting for a way of life and a modern, progressive
culture. Regarding the labor movement, it is not only fighting for increased wages and the
right to organize, but also to wider social progress as those of child rights, the release
of political prisoners .. . currently, there are protests about the death penalty,
secularization, Islamic law, the freedom of political prisoners, the veil, sexism,
pollution, LGBT rights ... people use social networks to communicate and organize. Our
party is involved in many of the struggles mentioned above (we are the only political
organization in Iran fighting for LGBT rights).
Shiva Mahbobi
Born in 1968, the Iranian feminist activist living in exile in Britain.
Since the revolution until today, are there has been progress in the rights and freedoms
of women? Can we organize a feminist activism in Iran?
Shiva Mahbobi: Women's rights violations have worsened since 1979. When the revolution was
hijacked by the Islamic regime, he began by decreeing that women should cover their bodies
and hair (appear in public without a hijab - the veil - is punishable by 74 lashes). The
clergy has released numerous decrees to impose and reinforce many restrictions in all
aspects of women's lives, including transport, labor, education, sports, the right to
divorce and have custody of children, the presence in the public space, the heritage ...
All these restrictions are reinforced in Iran today.
The veil is and has been one of the main tools of the regime to implement Islamic laws, it
was a way to keep women (half the population) under control. For them, it became the
symbol of their struggle against the regime. Every street and sidewalk is a battleground
between the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution and women about the proper use of the veil.
In 2013, nearly 3 million women received a warning of the Guardians for not having
respected the rule of mandatory veiling. The same year, more than 207,000 women were
forced to sign a statement that they do not commit the "offense" of being "improperly
veiled." During the last thirty-seven years, millions of women and girls were arrested for
disobeying the mandatory wearing of the veil. Despite these arrests, women continue to
challenge more than ever Islamic laws.
Regarding the work and education, according to official statistics in 2013 in Iran, except
for the carpet industry which employs mostly young girls under 16 years old, about 5% of
corporate workforce and public service are women. They are banned in over 75 university
courses, including engineering, nuclear physics, computer science, English literature,
archeology, political science and commerce ...
Considering the repression and laws that I just mentioned, it is very difficult or
impossible for an independent feminist, non-governmental Iran. In October 2014, after an
acid attack on young women in Isfahan (presumably perpetrated by the regime of the
underworld to spread fear among women who disobey Islamic law), thousands of women and men
organized demonstrations to sing that "freedom and security is the right of Iranian
women." An Iranian journalist and photographer was arrested after taking photographs of a
protest against these acid attacks in Isfahan: he intended to circulate the news of this
mobilization. People are well aware that the state supports and organizes harassment and
terror on Iran.
It also prohibits the March 8 and represses gatherings, as in 2006 in Tehran where several
women were arrested for having gathered in the city center. The examples are countless.
After more than three decades, the regime is still not able to force women to silence
Iran. The lack of formal organization does not preclude the existence of a progressive
feminist movement in the country. And social networks play an important role for advocacy
campaigns.
Do you believe that the Iranian could have a leading role in social transformation?
Shiva Mahbobi: Misogyny is a pillar of the regime and we have indubitable evidence that a
change will not take place until it has not been swept by revolution. The fundamental
progress for more freedom and equality for women as for any Iranian society will be at
that price. Iranian women have become one of the major forces challenging the regime and,
yes, it is indeed likely that they are leading the development of a movement for freedom
and equality in the country and throughout the Middle East.
What is the easiest to listen to the Iranian people, as you fight against capitalism or
against religion (at least, religion view the ayatollahs)?
Hamid Taqvaee: Today in Iran, fight capitalism without fighting religion is impossible!
The base of the Iranian theocracy is not the medieval feudalism, but capitalism of the XXI
century. Our role is to show the relationship to people. Secularism, or even some
anti-Islamism is a widespread belief in Iran today. People have lived in their daily
experience the atrocities of the regime and its laws, but they should also understand the
relationship between our Islamic state and the interests of the bourgeoisie in our region.
The local and international bourgeoisie was to support Khomeini and the Islamic State
since the 1979 revolution has not left him the choice. The links between struggles against
capitalism and against political Islam are decisive for the radical communist forces.
How do you interpret the comeback of Iran on the international stage after decades of
isolation?
Hamid Taqvaee: Under pressure from economic sanctions and political isolation, the
government was forced to sign the nuclear deal, but regarding the living conditions of the
masses and the working class, it will not change nothing. This could even worsen. Claiming
economic growth, and to absorb foreign investment, it has imposed austerity policies.
On the other hand, Khamenei, the supreme leader, and its fundamentalist supporters in
government are against the normalization of relations with the West. Anti-Americanism is a
strategy and a well-established ideology in Iran, so that any backward vis-à-vis this
position could significantly weaken the regime and start a new protest movement. That is
why this standardization is not a step forward franc from the regime. On one hand, they
need economic growth but on the other they can strategically afford it! This is an
insurmountable paradox for the regime and the source of endless quarrel between different
factions in the government.

Hello, you will find attached, and on our website, the federal leaflet CGA "To make them
yield: this is the time to fight!", which we will distribute at future protests against
labor law: ---- The labor law is work more to earn less ... when you're not unemployed
---- That sums up the project of El Khomri law. These are not "concessions" government
that will change the logic of these measures to satisfy the aspirations of employers.
Worse, some "advanced" as the staff of account activity (CPA), which boasts the CFDT,
contains germs back to the worker booklet establishing a generalized filing of wage
earners. All this points to a well-orchestrated comedy yellow unions sign agreements in
obtaining "concessions", MEDEF pretended to grumble and the government itself as the
impartial arbiter defending the general interest. Huge hoax.
The purpose of the law being alone e-faced boss
The labor law reverses the "hierarchy of norms" giving primacy to enterprise agreements
over sectoral agreements and labor code. Enterprise agreements may be less favorable to
wage earners as branch agreements or the labor code. We are moving towards a "uberisation"
of work: atomized es employees and "free" to define the terms of their contracts with
their employers. For those already concerned es by oppression and blackmail linked to
patriarchy and racism, it is the insurance of worsening violence.
Social history shows as isolated-es, the wage earners are losing face-es antagonists
aspirations bosses. On the contrary, the recognition of common interests between wage
earners, the sense of belonging to the same class, which enable wage earners to collective
struggle, solidarity and snatch the rights to the bosses and to 'State. This bill
continues precisely the opposite goal. This is destroying what remains of the social gains
torn during the twentieth century art by the employee to give all power to the bosses.
Our goal uni-es at the base facing the state and the bosses
There is no inevitability. Remember the struggle against the Juppé plan in 1995 and
against the CPE in 2006 that pushed the governments. With the Liberal steamroller, the
solution lies in the construction of the power struggle on the class and mass bases. We
must build a movement uniting wage earners, insecure, unemployed-is-s, students with high
school student-by-s, apprentice-es to stop the social regression and the government's
security aspirations (state of emergency laws "anti-terrorist").
To win you have to reconnect with more aggressive methods such as occupations of
workplaces, blockages of critical economic centers, etc. It is also particularly important
that the strikes become massive, they extend and are rooted in the period to increase the
ratio of decisive force.
To extend the movement, building a united movement at the base, with those who do not want
to suffer. It is through self-management of our struggles we can stay united-es and drive
ourselves motion without depending on the pace of union bureaucracies.
Self-management of struggles today ... and tomorrow the whole society
This struggle against the Labour Law should launch a social class movement that has to
project the direct transformation of society and the delegates most politicians. It is
from the social movements that has to build direct and equal management of the company,
production and distribution of goods and services. Now, in the struggle, make learning and
decide collectively manage mobilizations; Tomorrow, take over the running of the society
free of capitalism and the state.

The popular district of Molenbeek, under the spotlight for several months, is now targeted
by the extreme right, which claims to cast aspersions on all of its inhabitants and
residents. Antifascist rally against-Saturday, April 2, at 13h, Place de la Bourse in
Brussels. ---- The racist and fascist group called ‘Géneration Identitaire’ has issued a
call for a “European” anti-muslim gathering to be held this upcoming Saturday 2nd of April
in the municipality of Molenbeek. ---- Although the mayor has stated that their
demonstration won’t be authorized, it is obvious that the far right seeks to turn
Brussels, especially Molenbeek, into the symbol of their islamophobic obsession, and as
witnessed in the past, the rest of the political establishment will follow the trend.
All the while terrorists kill civilians without discrimination here and abroad. We the few
muslim militants of our organizations realize that the muslim community on top of grief
has to face shameless, violent, sexist, often institutionalized islamophobia. We are
physically and verbally assaulted, discriminated against in all spheres of our lives.
Sterile controversies and hateful discourses, that only aim to attract populist votes,
distil fear to hide the government’s failures in social justice, equality and foreign
affairs. We refuse that the memory of the victims be instrumentalized by politicians
against the inhabitants of our municipality and the muslim community as a whole. Kick
islamophobia off the streets!
Let’s gather and show them our refusal, show them our Brussels, our Molenbeek,
multicultural and diverse! We, militants and non-militants, muslims and non-muslims,
inhabitants of Molebeek or elsewhere call for a gathering to move forward together,
towards a more equal and just world. Against state racism, islamophobia and all
oppressions in our neighborhoods!
This demonstration will be the occasion for women and men, whose voices are too often
silenced, to be heard.
