Elephants, bears and giraffes died on their watch

Shut Down the Indonesian Zoo Association!

Sign The Petition

Dear friends,
The Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia has been nicknamed the "zoo of death." In just a few years, hundreds of animals have died there. Orangutans eat packages of cookies that visitors throw at them, paper and all, and one giraffe passed away after ingesting 44 pounds of plastic. At Bandung Zoo, sun bears are so hungry they eat their own dung. Yani the endangered elephant died there, crying and shackled in chains.
All of these animals were under the "care" of the Indonesian Zoo and Aquarium Association (PKBSI) when they died or were abused. Please sign this Care2 petition demanding that the Indonesian Government shut down the PKBSI to save more animals from abuse and death!
Many of Indonesia's zoos fell into disrepair while the Department of Forestry and Environment was in charge of running them. So the government turned to PKBSI to help improve the zoos and manage their operation. But since then, scores of animals have died on the association's watch.
What's more, PKBSI is plagued by conflicts-of-interest. Its Secretary General is also the owner of two for-profit safari parks, a dolphin park, and several wildlife-themed hotels and restaurants. He has admitted to shuffling animals back and forth between his private businesses and the zoos. He's even admitted to drawing up plans to bulldoze part of the Surabaya Zoo to make way for a new private restaurant. And yet, the government continues to allow his organization to manage and operate its zoos.
When Care2 super activist Poh Yee Holmes learned about this, she was outraged. She knew that in order to close PKBSI, she'd need people from all over the world to come together to help her. So she started a Care2 petition urging the Indonesian Department of Forestry and Environment to do the right thing and close down PKBSI. Will you help her protect the animals by signing her petition?
Thank you,
 Miranda B.
