She was at home with her family when she saw fire rising from another part of their village. Her family ran outside to see what was happening. Soldiers — in gray and blue Myanmar military uniforms — opened fire on them from behind. Fatima and her family started to sprint. Her father and 10-year-old sister, Rofia, were hit and fell to the ground. Fatima too was hit and soon fell. She told an Amnesty crisis investigator, “My neighbor grabbed me and carried me.” That day, soldiers mercilessly killed four members of Fatima’s family — her mother, her older brother, her younger sister, and her father. Fatima was hit by a bullet in the back of her right leg, just above the knee. After a week on the run, she finally received treatment in Bangladesh.
