We are learning right now what happens when the sex ratio becomes wildly out of whack, through a huge unintended experiment. In the world’s two most populated countries – China and India – there is a serious woman shortage.
In India, many families used sex-selective abortion to choose boys, until a law made that illegal. In China, similar decisions were encouraged by the “one-child” policy in place from 1979 to 2015, which prompted many parents to decide that their sole child must be a boy.
The common thread is gender discrimination, and we are seeing the consequences, such as human trafficking to make up for a shortage of brides, and an uptick in gender-based violence.
And while women are losing because of this gap, the truth is, we all lose. We don't yet know what all of the long-term consequences might be in societies affected by a shortage of women.
