Raphael Lebrujah is a good connoisseur of Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava) and the revolutionary
experience that has animated this region since the Arab Spring of 2011. ---- He has
nurtured many conversations with Kurdish revolutionary activists in exile in France but
also in Kurdistan where he made two trips. ---- His highly descriptive work focuses on the
geostrategic and military analyzes of the battle of Kobanê (2014), whose heroic resistance
projected the Kurdish left in the spotlight, to that of Afrîn (2018), the first Burning
setback inflicted by the Turkish army and its Islamist auxiliaries. The Rojava-Democratic
Federation of Northern Syria is still at war, it must be remembered, and that absorbs 70 %
of its meager resources.
Nevertheless, the Kurdish left is keen to ensure the popular foundation of its project of
democratic confederalism. The Federation thus paid the luxury, in this chaotic Middle
East, to organize free elections in December 2017. The cantonal assemblies are
representative of the ethno-religious mosaic of the country, include men and women. women,
and a minority of opposition linked to the KDP of Massoud Barzani, the PKK's great rival
in Kurdistan.

In a country in ruins, self-government encourages the revival of production through the
creation of cooperatives, under the control of municipalities, but self-managed by
workers. Without coercion, rather encouraging the voluntary membership of small owners.
The author mentions the functioning of these cooperatives (agriculture-food, clothing
...), which can not represent the alpha and omega of an economic policy. What about the
great feudal properties for the moment untouched ? What about oil production,
hydro-electric (Tabqa dam), or cement (Lafarge) ? What about major infrastructure (Qamislo
airport, still under the control of the Damascus regime)? The author remains cautious
about the major choices and challenges facing the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria,
whose autonomy is very relative, and which must constantly negotiate with domestic actors
(feudal tribes) and external (Damascus, Ankara, Washington, Moscow, Paris ...) that
threaten this territory as big as Switzerland.

One of the most original parts of the book tries to define the doctrine of the democratic
confederalism, whose orientations escape the traditional categories: neither libertarian,
nor marxist, nor feminist, nor atheist, nor ecologist ... but at the same time a little of
all that to that time. Flexibility or ambiguity ? We have not finished questioning ourselves.

"We defend the north of Syria and Roja because we defend a world without fascism and
patriarchy." ---- YPJ (Women's Defense Units) International issued a statement on the
genocidal war of the Turkish state and recently increased attacks on the Kurds and
Kurdistan. ---- The full text of YPJ International's statement reads as follows: ----
"Erdogan and the AKP-MHP fascists demonstrated with the recent bombing of people already
displaced at the camp at Maxmur and Yazidis in Sengal their willingness to invade also
Rojava / Northern Syria and introduce fascism throughout Kurdistan and beyond. ---- For a
long time, the Turkish state maintained a strong connection with Daesh / ISIS. It is clear
to us that they are different faces of the same enemy.

This fascist unit of the Turkish state, its mercenaries and Daesh is being confronted by
comrades and the whole society here in northern Syria and all Kurdistan. After Afrin's
ongoing and brutal invasion, NATO's Turkish state threatens to strike back into the
liberated area of northern Syria, where the revolution is advancing with women at the
forefront.

The moment our comrades are fighting the Daesh in Deir ez-Zor, advancing to free Hajin,
others continue to attack the invaders in Afrin, we are responding with a cry of freedom
to the threats against this revolution. It has become our revolution because we, as
internationalists, have learned, seen and lived, that people in northern Syria are laying
the foundation for a free and communitarian society based on gender equality, ecology and
basic democracy.

Opposite fascism, feudalism, patriarchy, and all other forms of oppression unite us as
women from different places, cultures, and traditions. We came here to confront ourselves
with what it means to build a revolutionary process, to participate in the construction
and development of all that is needed and to defend it by all means necessary.

It is not only a physical defense but also an ideological defense. This is a women's
revolution! The front against oppression is everywhere.

The economic and political relations that any organization or state maintains with Turkey
are also responsible for this situation of a future war. One example is the German state
that sells tanks to Turkey and maintains "good diplomacy" with the fascists. All of this
helps Turkey to continue its tradition of colonizing and massacring people.

As internationalists, we are also taking up arms against the Turkish state because of the
collaboration of other states in this war. For this reason we oppose even stronger fascism
to defend the revolution in Rojava. We share a struggle with the Kurds, Arabs,
Assyrians-Syrians, Turkmen, and a great diversity of people against patriarchy, the state
system and capitalism. The seeds for a free life are already spreading all over the world.

We will develop resistance everywhere. We need all people, comrades, to feel responsible,
not only to wait for the war, but to stop it now. It's time to fight fascism! Our places
are many, as are our methods in this battle. Silence means complicity, let's point out to
our enemies as a goal, make the situation visible, organize ourselves, begin to share and
spread the beautiful ideas that are the basis of this revolution.

As internationalist fighters, we believe that we become free women when faced with enemy
attacks shoulder to shoulder. Remembering all the comrades who fought for freedom to the
end, among them thousands of women, our response to these threats is an unlimited
resistance! Your courage and love for life is an example to us as we follow in your footsteps.

We will succeed!

Long live the popular struggle for freedom!

Long live the resistance of Rojava and northern Syria!

On December 23, 2018, in the afternoon, a group of Prague activists and activists
conducted a direct action to support Rojava at the headquarters of the Turkish Embassy in
the Czech Republic. ---- In protest against the invasion of other areas of the Democratic
Federation of Northern Syria, endorsed by the Turkish dictator Erdogan, activists and
activists of the newly formed Revolutionary Defense Committee in Rojava, several YPG and
YPJ Kurdish units fired before the building belonging to the Turkish Embassy in the Czech
Republic. fight the so-called Islamic State and the soldiers of fascist Turkey. ---- One
of the buildings belonging to the embassy of the authoritarian regime has soaked for a few
minutes the green-red-yellow smoke.
The activists and activists of the Revolutionary Defense Committee in Rojava on the
Rojava.info website (which we recommend going through and watching in the future) have
published the following statement:

Through the fence near this building, we fired several fumigants in the colors of the
Kurdish units YPG and YPJ, which Erdogan portrays as terrorist. The real terrorist is, of
course, the Turkish state.

Whether it is an unprovoked attack on the Afrina region, which, as a result of the Turkish
invasion, had to flee more than 160,000 people, or a constant violation of human rights in
Turkey. Czech political representation, which recently used the Kurdish unit as an example
of "people who do not fight but fight" at the time of the so-called "refugee crisis", is
silent today, despite the fact that they are sitting in a Turkish prison for the support
of these units two Czech citizens - Markéta Všelichová and Mirko Farkas.

Erdogan does not deserve red carpets, but a war crimes trial. Turkey is neither a trading
partner nor a "democratic country". We refuse to turn our backs on our Kurdish allies who
fought for us and died in battles against the so-called Islamic state.

We are aware that a few smoked smokers will not change the policy of fascist Turkey, but
we hope that this symbolic act of disagreement will attract at least some attention to the
acts of the Turkish regime, and that we will inspire others who are not indifferent to the
fate of Rojava to take actions to defend it - in the current situation wiser than doing
nothing.

No action was taken by the police late in the event.

Ralph Percy, the 12th Duke of Northumberland, has a fortune of £370 million. He planned to
build 119 flats and eight houses on land used for 40 allotments for over 100 years next to
Syon House in Isleworth. Allotment holders have been organising against this move since
2015 and in early December 2018 a planning inspector threw out an appeal by  the Duke
against a decision by  Hounslow Council  blocking the scheme. ---- The Duke has been
letting the allotments run down over the last few years and had not renewed leases. Now
hopefully he will be forced to renew the releases. The Duke wanted the new housing
development to pay for £13 million to repair and restore Syon House, London seat of the
Percys. He also owns Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. One local campaigner described the
happy news as "like we've slain Goliath". The allotments had originally been made
available by the Percys in 1917 and were seen as a wildlife haven and a "little piece of
paradise" according to one allotment holder.

These are the sort of people owning most of the land in Britain. Speed the day when they
are swept away and all land is held in common!

More than 250 patients waited 12 hours or more in accident and emergency departments in
November 2018 according to NHS figures. More than 54,000 people waited than the target
maximum of 4 hours, meaning only 87.6% of patients were seen within that time span. ----
Wages are still a third lower in parts of the UK than they were in 2008. A TUC research
department reports that the average worker has lost £11,800 in real earnings since 2008.
Worst effected were parts of London, Surrey, North Yorkshire and North Wales. ----
Meanwhile homelessness in England went up 120% with more than 24,000 people sleeping rough
over the Christmas period. This number has gone up significantly over the last five years.
12,300 people are sleeping rough on the streets whilst 11,950 are sleeping in cars, on
trains, on buses or in tents. The homeless charity Crisis said the number of people
sleeping rough in England was more than double the official statistics.

Another homeless charity Shelter reported that 1 in 200 people in Britain were now
sleeping rough or in temporary accommodation, with homeless figures soaring by 1,000 a
month. The rollout of Universal Credit and the freezing of local housing allowances has
put the cost of basic accommodation out of the reach of many. Combined with the lack of
social housing, rents that have risen massively, and cuts in social welfare, a perfect
storm of homelessness is developing. This is not some sort of abstract problem, many if
not all of us have walked down a street and seen one homeless person after another
sleeping on the pavement or in doorways.

In places like France and Hungary, there have been mass protests against this Age of
Austerity. Isn't it about time it happened here?

At the factory, since the battles lost against Labor laws, unionism is weakened, and the
atmosphere as gray as our work blues. There is enough to revolt: violence and dangerous
repetitive work, shenanigans, intimidation and threats ... It is the temporary workers who
suffer the most. ---- Already 4 am, the alarm clock pulls me out of bed. A few minutes
later I am in the kitchen, in blue work, swallowing a coffee and ... some pills to relieve
tendon pain. It is only Wednesday and already the fatigue of the week is accumulating. My
old Ford starts, phew ! Let's go for the daily commute, with the same cars on the road,
the same people, the same car park on which I park after having crossed the large porch
proclaiming " Welcome to the Georges-Besse factory - Renault Douai ".

Georges Besse, the CEO of Renault executed by the group Direct Action in 1986, considered
that this factory, built in 1970, was " a mistake " . At the time, the state-owned
shareholder had insisted that it be implanted in the Douaisis, promised mass unemployment
by the closure of coal mines. By the end of the 1970s, 8,500 employees were working there.
Today we are 3,400 on permanent contracts ; 800 to 1,300 temporary workers according to
the periods ; 15 to 20 % of women.

On the chain the pace (61 vehicles per hour !) Is untenable, despite anxiolytics and
painkillers.
The production is divided between several buildings, on nearly 350 hectares. In the " DB
building ", we receive and assemble the organs of the engines: starter, alternator,
radiator and a whole lot of other stuff ... In stamping and sheet metal buildings, huge
presses the size of a small building transform large rolls of sheet metal (each costs
millions of euros ...) in covers, sides of cases, wings, etc. They will then be welded and
assembled by robots before deburring. At the painting building, the still naked crates are
immersed in huge baths of paint before sending them to the assembly building, the " DA ".
". There, on an assembly line that runs on two floors, all the rest of the vehicle is
assembled (dashboard, steering wheel, seats, electronics, options, windows). The completed
vehicle is tested, then parked on a parking lot from which the trucks of the Cat will
embark the Space, Talisman and other Scenic.

Struggles among temporary workers
At this moment, on the factory, the atmosphere is as gray as our work blues. The lost
battle against the labor laws weighs heavily on morale. Two combative unions coexist on
the site. The CGT is quite close to unsubstantial France, and SOUTH more politically
independent, but both carry similar claims and often act together. Unfortunately, the
intermittent calls to the strike, in 2016 and 2017, mobilized only convinced. On one of
the days of action, a group of young temporary workers was on the verge of going on
strike, but the management has stifled the rebellion in the bud. The team leaders came
running to threaten them ( " It's forbidden for temporary workers ! And your contract ?
"). SOUTH and the CGT, parties in protest at that time, could not intervene, and there was
nothing to expect from FO and the CFDT, non-strikers for the most part.

Reformers (claimed) of FO, the majority, do not hesitate to explain to the operators that
they have more to gain by collaborating with the management rather than by fighting. Only
the CFDT is more yellow, with caricature leaflets boasting of " winning " rolls and sweets
for the staff !

Compulsory volunteering infernal rates
There is enough to revolt at Renault Douai. At the very bottom of the scale, it is the
temporary workers who cash the most, forced to accept overtime. They are the first victims
of Saturday said " volunteering " - ironically renamed " voluntary volunteering " . The
team leader regularly makes individual canvassing to fill his schedule of " volunteers "
threatening them in a veiled way of non-renewal of their contract.

No wonder we drag our feet to work on Saturday in this factory worthy of Germinal .
Violence of repetitive work, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), intimidation and threats,
not to mention the dangerous working conditions, as at the PSA plant in Trith-Saint-Léger [1].

It was discovered that the chain was sometimes accelerated in secret ...
To the question " what is production ? Operators and operators will answer: " Production
is death. On the chain, the pace (61 vehicles per hour !) Is grueling despite anxiolytics
and painkillers. It was discovered that it was sometimes accelerated in secret, just to
catch up. Before a delegate notices and protests, schemers put the speed back to normal
... This summer, because of high temperatures, an interim has caused discomfort. Chain
stopped. Alerted, the head of the editing department came running. Not to take his news,
but to assess the lost time and restart production as soon as possible.

In fact, it is common that if an agency worker is injured on the chain, the leaders
dissuade him from going to the infirmary. A leader takes the wounded to the bathroom and
then, a disinfectant blow on the wound, a bandage, and return to production. The goal ? Do
not raise the curve of work accidents, to give a model factory image in terms of safety.
We must " be competitive with the other factories of the group, " we are told, otherwise "
the site will close " ! SUD and the CGT keep denouncing this organization of work, but the
management turns a deaf ear, obsessed by its " kaizen " projects . Behind this managerial
jargon and its goal of " improvement of ergonomics " hides a trivial reality: it is to
locate the positions that could be removed to redistribute tasks to other workers,
preferably temporary. For fear of losing his job, the interim does not protest ...

Fight against suffering at work
How to deal with the violence of bosses and work ? The only foci of possible resistance
here are SOUTH and the CGT, even if they are weakened. It is through mutual help and
collective struggle that everyone can gain confidence and invest. Today, we must fight for
less suffering at work. Tomorrow, we will fight for the socialization of the means of
production, under the control of the workers. When the first and the first concerned will
organize the production themselves, it will be the end of the suffering, the reign of the
chiefs and the mistreatment. We can invent a society rid of capitalism and Carlos Ghosn
and Thierry Bolloré of all kinds !

Damien (AL Douai)
