Protesters Shot, Mass Arrests Across Cameroon

Police shot and wounded at least seven people and arrested 117 in cities and towns where peaceful protests were organized Saturday.
Following the mass arrests protests marched through the streets of Cameroon’s political capital Yaounde, calling for the unconditional release of everyone arrested during demonstrations Saturday.
Douala, Yaounde, and the western town of Mbounda all saw protests organized by opposition parties.
Incumbent President Paul Biya was declared the winner of the October presidential election that continues to be challenged by opposition groups, who have announced a “national resistance program” until Biya steps down.
Biya has ruled over Cameroon for 36 years and is now the second oldest president in sub-Saharan Africa after neighboring Equatorial Guinea’s president Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. When his latest term is up, Biya will be 93 years old.
