anything in terms of viability. ---- We then moved on to the news of the planned
deforestation of the pine forest of Cattinara to make way for the new Burlo
Garofalo hospital. This is also an environmental damage caused by a senseless
decision and which will bring nothing in terms of benefits to the population. It
is shocking that, at a time when we are still immersed in a global pandemic that
has shown how criminal the health cuts in recent decades have been, we decide to
spend 108 million euros to move a hospital instead of investing it in improving
and expanding. the existing.

Finally, the (rancid) icing on the cake is the new tunnel project in the Karst,
20 kilometers long, by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana to gain ten - let's repeat it -
ten minutes of travel!

The latter proposal is the one that appears more surreal: over the last twenty
years similar projects had already been proposed several times and all of them
were always soundly rejected in the environmental impact assessment phase, as
well as disavowed by territorial mobilizations. After all, one cannot see how it
could be otherwise, given the delicate hydrogeological composition of the Karst,
a unicum to be preserved and not to be devastated with projects useful only for
economic and political interest groups that promote overbuilding.

These three different events have as their unifying trait a vision of the
environment as a resource to be squeezed at any cost to make profits. A mentality
that does not look at the true needs of people but that aims only to "run the
economy", telling us that this will bring benefits for everyone and everyone when
we know that they are just lies.

Is there any money to spend on these works? Good! So let's use them to invest in
local and neighborhood healthcare, to increase beds and hire staff, to secure
schools, to modernize the railway network and local public transport - starting
with the re-commissioning of the Opicina tram, now stopped for years - and lower
costs.

Fighting against these havoc is a must: associations and groups of citizens are
starting to mobilize and make their voices heard and this is undoubtedly a
positive sign. It is essential that those who live in a territory can decide
their destiny. But winning is possible if popular movements are born that are
able to transform indignation into concrete anger, out of any institutional and
party mediation, concretely putting a spoke in the wheel of speculators and rulers.

There are examples, even close to us: we are thinking, for example, of the TAV
projects on the Karst or the regasification plant in the Gulf.

Time to start getting in the way again.
