Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has worsened the food security crisis in many African countries. Across Africa, countries rely on Russia and Ukraine for much of their wheat, fertilizer, or vegetable oil imports, but the war disrupts global commodity markets and trade flows to the continent, increasing already high food prices. Many countries in Africa were already in a food crisis before the war, and millions of people are now at risk of experiencing hunger. The World Food Program has warned that if the war lasts beyond April, acute hunger may increase by 17 percent globally, with the sharpest increases expected in countries in East, West, and Southern Africa. Everyone has the right to safe and nutritious food. Governments should do everything in their power now to mitigate the impact of rising food prices and avert a hunger crisis. |
