The FIFA World Cup 2022 kicks off in Qatar in November. Yet the “beautiful game” of football that unites the world, with a global audience of over 3.5 billion, is stained with human rights abuses. Since 2010, when FIFA awarded the 2022 World Cup to Qatar despite its poor human rights record, thousands of migrant workers building or servicing the infrastructure for the games have lost their lives to unexplained causes, suffered injuries, or been victims of wage theft by their employers. Hundreds of thousands of workers, or their families, have not received financial compensation or any other adequate remedy for these serious labor abuses. Bottom line: There is no Qatar World Cup celebration without remedy for abuses of migrant workers. FIFA should pay up now. Today we've launched a new campaign calling on them to do so. Join us and tell FIFA not to leave victims and their families behind. |
