The French teacher and pedagogue Célestin Freinet (1896-1966), initiator of an
emancipatory pedagogy after the First World War, visited one of the schoolcommunities in Hamburg in 1925. Contrary to what one might have thought, thesystem of the gemeinschaftsschule did not enthuse the communist pedagogue. ----Célestin Freinet is a major figure in active pedagogy emerging at the start ofthe 20th century. The pedagogical method to which he left his name was forged,just like the libertarian schools of Hamburg with the same desire to make apopular school. ---- In the summer of 1925, while a young teacher working inBar-sur-Loup, he was invited by one of his German correspondents to visit "someof the famous schools in Hamburg where, at the end of the 1914 war , we had triedto realize the myth of the integral anarchist school without the authority of themaster, without rules or sanctions"[1].The brief account that we have of this visit indicates that it did not arouseFreinet's enthusiasm. They do not seem to answer these pedagogical questions:"These schools, although very comfortably installed, did not bring anythingpositive to help the young master solve the problems posed to him by his smallvillage school and, beyond that, the 'public school'[2].The communist militant that is Freinet does not seem to see the kinship of spiritbetween the Volksschule (literally communal school but which can also betranslated as people's school) and what will constitute one of the specificitiesof his pedagogy or even the character proletarian of this movement, which he alsoseems to miss. It is the same judgment that appears in the writings of JakobRobert Schmid a few years later.These experiments, rediscovered in France by the re-edition in 1970 of the workof Schmid (Maspéro) aroused interest, but the research work on thegemeinschaftsschule is still incomplete.
