in Alma. Faced with the devastating impact of the repeated violence and the
inaction of the high school authorities, Kloé had to change secondary schools.
The system remains deeply transphobic and we see a clear refusal of people in
positions of power to recognize any gender identity or expression that goes
beyond the binary. It's not the fault of education campaigns that haven't made
their way to those in power to change their backward mentality because there has
been. Through these refusals to recognize the existence of trans and non-binary
people, a relationship of domination is expressed that is systemic and remains
firmly rooted in our regions. Transphobic domination must fall. It's time to take
action to support trans and non-binary communities and speak out against the
reproduction of this system of domination by transphobes.

Yesterday, in Rouyn-Noranda, Sophie Labelle, a talented comic book author and
transgender activist, was giving a lecture at the Livresse bookstore as part of
her tour when an aggressive individual came to register trying to interrupt the
presentation. The response from the community has been firm, but calm; the
individual was kicked out of the bookstore despite his hateful kicks and screams
and he was unable to get back inside. From Saguenay, one can only feel a lot of
empathy for what Sophie may feel and a great feeling of solidarity with the
militant community of Rouyn-Noranda. Here, for almost a decade, the regional far
right has shown up (or threatened to do so) at activist events in an attempt to
make this kind of scene. In these moments, there is nothing more precious than a
militant milieu which shows its solidarity and organizes itself. Against each
hateful gesture, a multitude of anti-oppressive and anti-authoritarian
initiatives have emerged. Reactionary hateful gestures are a sign that activists
are disrupting and bringing about transformations in society. Together with
Sophie, Kloé and all non-binary and transphobic communities, let's stand up
against transphobia!
