Today around the squares of Trieste a dozen signs appeared hanging on Christmas
trees with the words "41bis=torture. Solidarity with Alfredo Cospito. (TO)". Asmall gesture of solidarity with the struggle that Cospito is carrying out with ahunger strike that has now reached its sixty-sixth day and which risks leading tohis death. ---- His request is simple: to get out of that place of legalizedtorture which is the prison regime of 41bis. In the already aberrant institutionof the prison, the 41 bis and the life imprisonment are real forms of torture.The 41 bis with the isolation and the enormous restrictions on air, visits,telephone calls, correspondence, aims at the annihilation of the faculties and ofthe person himself. The life sentence prevents access to the so-calledpenitentiary benefits, such as outside work, home care, exit permits, to thoseconvicted of specific crimes who do not collaborate with state justice, it aimsto bend the person not only and not so much to actually obtain information but asa form of submission.Alfredo Cospito was convicted of a demonstrative attack that caused neitherdeaths nor injuries, but despite this he was accused of the crime of "massacreagainst the security of the state". The latter, as pointed out by severalparties, was not used either for the Piazza Fontana massacre, or for the Bolognamassacre, just to give some examples.In 2022, the highest number of suicides in the last 10 years was recorded inItalian prisons, together with the cases of beatings that are reported and themassacre that took place in penitentiaries during the riots in March 2020, thisrepresents the drama of the prison condition.
