On the morning of February 6, an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 with its epicenter
near Meres (tr. Kahramanmaras) and Dîlok (tr. Gaziantep) in Bakur (Turkey),followed by a second equally powerful shock, caused a humanitarian catastrophe.In Turkey The destruction reached as far as Amed (tr. Diyarbakir), 300 km fromthe epicenter, and the predominantly Arab areas of Hatay. On the Syrian border,the areas most affected were both the areas occupied by the Turkish state and bythe militias of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, including Afrin and Idlib, and those underthe direct control of the Damascus regime (Aleppo, Latakia, Tartus and Hama). Theterritories of the Autonomous Administration of Northeast Syria (Rojava) havemostly suffered limited damage, with the exception of the Shehba region, the cityof Tall Rifaat and the Kurdish neighborhoods of Aleppo, areas where mainlydisplaced people live who found refuge there following the invasion of Afrin in2018 and who are constantly under siege by the armed forces of Damascus.The situation is dramatic. At the moment the bodies of 20,000 dead and almost80,000 wounded have been pulled from the rubble, but a real hecatomb is looming,with forecasts of tens of thousands of victims. Hundreds of thousands of peopleneed urgent shelter, warmth and subsistence in the midst of harsh winter.The condition for the Kurdish population of the region is particularly heavy.Bakur (Turkey), where popular anger against Erdogan is mounting due to theslowness of relief efforts, has been militarized by the Ankara government, withthe proclamation of a curfew, many areas with little or no relief efforts,citizens left without support and forced to organize themselves relief despitethe obstruction of the army to access the affected areas. In this context, theHDP, an expression of the Kurdish and Turkish left, has set up a centralcoordination committee organizing relief and aid teams in many of the provincesdevastated by the earthquake and abandoned by the state.On the Syrian side, in a context already strongly tested by 11 years ofinternational embargo, in the Kurdish city of Afrin (under occupation of theTurkish state since 2018) relief is almost non-existent and the shipment ofmaterial at risk of seizure by jihadist militias . The areas of Shehba and TallRifaat, where initial assistance had been activated by the autonomousadministration of Rojava (available to provide medical assistance to any personin any region of Syria) were bombed by the Turkish army in the 48 hours followingthe earthquake. The Autonomous Administration and the Forces of Democratic Syriahave launched an appeal to the international community to open the border gatesand allow humanitarian aid to enter every area of Syria, in addition the SDF haveprepared teams of rescuers and humanitarian aid to be sent to the affected areasunder control of Damascus or occupied by the Turkish state, convoys are preventedfrom entering the affected areas.To manage the emergency in the face of this dramatic scenario, the KURDISTAN REDCRESCENT ("Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê"), the largest international humanitarianorganization for Kurdistan, active since 1993, was immediately activated. TheKurdistan Red Crescent has been active in the region for years of Kurdistan,bringing medical care and basic necessities, financing the reconstruction ofpublic buildings, such as schools, clinics and hospitals."Mezzaluna Rossa Kurdistan Italia" is the Italian emanation of Heyva Sor inKurdistanê. Based in Livorno, it has been active since 2015 and in these 8 yearsit has developed and participated in numerous campaigns and projects. Weintervened in Afrin in 2018, following the Turkish military attack, with thesetting up of refugee camps in Shahba and the restructuring of a clinic for thehealth management of refugees.
