Dear New Yorkers,

Eighty-nine NYPD officers were charged with significant misconduct by a civilian oversight board after the protests following the killing of George Floyd in 2020. More than two and a half years later, just 12 of them have been disciplined.

That’s according to a new 590-page report from the Civilian Complaint Review Board released to the public yesterday.

Most of those officers’ cases are still winding through the police department’s internal disciplinary process, which could include an administrative trial and the NYPD commissioner’s decision on the final outcome.

Five of the officers were spared discipline through retirement or resignation.

Some other items of note:

  • The mayor has ended the vaccine mandate for city workers. Nearly 1,800 public employees had been previously terminated from their jobs for failing to get their required COVID-19 vaccine shots. Now, they have to reapply to get those gigs back.

  • What’s next in Albany for housing: The lawmakers who head the housing committees in both parts of the legislature say they agree with the governor and mayor that only building more housing will solve the housing crisis in New York, they told THE CITY. But they disagree on a lot else, including tax breaks for developers.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Tuesday's Weather Rating: 4/10. A decent start, but clouds increase as a storm system approaches from the west. Scattered showers are possible by afternoon with periods of rain overnight. Highs in the low 40s and feeling increasingly damp. The vibes are unsettled today!

THE KICKER: Beat the February blues with splashes of color in the city’s best public art this month. (In particular, we love the new Kusama wall mosaic in Grand Central Madison.)

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Tuesday.
Love,
THE CITY
