Forgetting is one of the powerful weapons of capital against the rebellious
indignation of the people. In Brazil, oblivion is not a secondary effect, a meredetail, but a powerful glue that links and gives continuity to the differentmoments and different conjunctures of history. Oblivion is a founding landmark ofBrazil, crucial for its birth, its consolidation as a nation-state project andits continuity as a political entity and tool for the domination of peoples inthis geography. ---- It was oblivion that declared independence over indigenouscorpses and with coffers full of wealth produced in a brutal regime of slavery;forgetting produced a constant bet on legality, even among the most massivesectors of the left; and our citizen constituent, even though it was the resultof popular struggle, was the institutionalization of oblivion, celebrated withsalves over the tortured cries of comrades and comrades, many still absent.The five years without Marielle tell the story of yet another forgetfulness. Atthis time in the country where there are those who celebrate "love overcominghate" and the triumph of broad alliances, here, on the radical side of popularstruggles, we have the habit of not forgetting.Marielle Franco was a socialist militant, a black LGBT woman, a mother living onthe outskirts, a parliamentarian in full exercise of her mandate, murdered withnine shots in the center of the second largest city in the country, with weaponspurchased by the federal police, executed by murderers of rent linked to localoligarchies that worked in the service of forces that we still do not know,although we all know for sure. The shots at Marielle were, without a doubt, anattack against all of us.The city, the country and various peoples around the world rose in solidarity,mourning and indignation. Marielle's murder and the questions that followedbecame cries in many languages in many geographies - who killed? Who had Mariellekilled?Five years later, years of a tight conjuncture, of the fascist sewer empowered inthe center of the State, of the pandemic made in the massacre of workers, whichnormalized death in real time, every day, Marielle still today, perhaps evenmore, concentrates the ecosystem of misfortunes imposed on the working people inthat country and, at the same time, the different forms that the struggles andresistances from below assume, all of this at the same time contained in thestory of an execution in the center of the second largest city in the country, inthe story of a militant whose life was dedicated to the feminist, socialist andanti-racist struggle and whose death was ordered from inside luxurious mansions.For all these reasons, remembering Marielle is not accepting the imposition ofthe pact of oblivion, is not allying with the coup leaders and liberals whocelebrate her death, is not exchanging the strength of the oppressed classes forthe alliance sewn with those on top in the name of an abstract and symbolicgovernability, is not to betray its memory by throwing away a legacy of strugglesin the name of the electoral fetish.We remember Marielle denouncing those who forget her: Marielle's PSOL, whichevery March 14 cares less about taking to the streets radically to remember andfollow her struggle and with each election becomes less socialist and lessindependent, asserting her condition more and more auxiliary line of a loweredgovernmentism and allied with the right; her companions, some of them greatexponents of leftist struggles in Rio de Janeiro, who today speak of her memorywithout materializing it in a radicalization of struggles; the militants of thecollectives and organizations that buy into the forgetting pact, a politicalproject of the bourgeoisie, and insist on not remembering Marielle in anythingother than the prints on t-shirts...Against this pact, against those who normalize it, against those who continue tobet on the legality of the State that killed Marielle, against those who shakehands and sit at the table with their murderers or those who ordered theirmurder, we equally stand up in denunciation and disposition: we will not forgetbecause we take life seriously and we take the death of each comrade, of eachmilitant, as a living pain in our hearts and materialized in our political practice.As anarchists, we remember Marielle by radicalizing our struggle, by knowing whyshe was murdered and by saying that, knowing this, we will firmly follow herlegacy, we will point out that the Brazilian state is this racist instrument ofperpetuation of violence that is capitalism in this geography and saying, onceagain, that there is no way out of building a strong and organized people capableof gaining rights and walking towards the world that, we are certain, Mariellealso dreamed of for the future.We remember Marielle for not agreeing with the militarization of life, with thecriminalization of poverty, with the systematic genocide of poor and black youthin the country, with the peripheralization of cities and with violence as theonly possible way of relating between people.
