Dear New Yorkers,

As you know, we cover the five boroughs. But we’ve gone beyond those borders — to Hempstead, Long Island — for a story happening against the backdrop of a big fight in Albany right now.

Why should you care what’s going on in the ‘burbs? Because it has major implications for how lawmakers may address the state’s (and city’s) massive housing crisis.

Gov. Kathy Hochul wants New York to be the next state that starts requiring towns and cities to build more housing, especially near transit — as California, New Jersey, Connecticut and other states already do. But leaders of the state Senate and Assembly are pushing back, as we reported yesterday.

Three localities in the Town of Hempstead, in Nassau County, offer a test case. How their fights for and against development play out — and how Hochul’s plan ultimately lands in Albany — matters a lot for the future of the region, experts say.

“The more housing that gets built on Long Island, the less pressure there is on housing prices in the city,” said Chris Jones, a senior fellow with the Regional Plan Association.

Some other items of note:

  • In a blistering 600-page court filing, a former state Supreme Court judge has accused several prominent lawyers affiliated with the Brooklyn Democratic Party of committing professional misconduct in a successful campaign to oust her from the bench. It’s the latest shot in an eight-year legal battle waged by the ex-judge, Laura Lee Jacobson.

  • The Astor Place Cube may spin once again! The iconic East Village public art installation has been immobile since April 2022. But now, a Department of Transportation plan calls for it to be restored by mid-summer, THE CITY has learned.

  • Every single one of the 600 electric for-hire vehicle licenses offered by the city’s taxi agency got snapped up this week, leaving drivers to wonder: Where are they going to charge them? THE CITY spoke to drivers who already drive EVs — including one who previously returned a Tesla after six months because he had a hard time finding a place to plug in.

  • We’re just getting started covering the 2023 City Council elections (Primary Day is June 27!) and we want to make our reporting better with your help. Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Friday's Weather Rating: 5/10. Clouds increase as the day goes on, with high temperatures once again reaching the mid to upper 50s. A few showers are expected by late afternoon and early evening with damp weather tonight. The vibes are a little unsettled again!

THE KICKER: “It’s a 150-pound dog — it pretty much walked me.” For St. Patrick’s Day, here’s an archive look at the massive Irish Wolfhounds, mascots of the Fighting 69th Infantry Regiment who have led the city’s St. Pat’s parade for nearly 200 years.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Friday.

Love,
THE CITY
