WORLD WORLDWIDE USA NewYork NY NewYorkCity NYC thecity THECITY News Journal Update - THE CITY Scoop: Fifteen Years and At Least Four Deaths Later, NYC Is Still Years Away From Fixing This Notorious Intersection

Dear New Yorkers,

Since 2011, four people have died in the Bronx corridor where East 177th Street, East Tremont Avenue and Devoe Avenue intersect, with 277 other people injured in 197 crashes.

Locals know it’s dangerous, with a bus depot, post office trucks and a carwash line all competing for road space. That forces pedestrians, including school kids and parents walking to and from a nearby building with an elementary school and a middle school, to navigate traffic-clogged crosswalks with all-too-brief walk lights.

“I think it’s a travesty that nothing’s been done,” said 55-year resident Magdamary Marcamo as she walked through the area with THE CITY while several drivers, including one behind the wheel of a school bus, ran red lights.

“See what I’m talking about?”

New York City originally presented plans for a redesign in 2008. Two mayors later, the city says it won’t start work until late 2024 — and won’t finish until at least late 2027.

Some other items of note:

  • While New York has regained 96% of the jobs it lost in the pandemic, a bank crisis is looming and automation is coming — that and more in THE CITY’s monthly economic update for March.

  • Reader Dolores L. asked for “refresher information” on ranked choice voting, and we are happy to oblige! Here is our guide on the voting method, which will be in play for City Council primaries in June — but not district attorney races.

  • We’re just getting started covering those Council races (Primary Day is June 27!) and we want to make our reporting better with your help. What are your questions about voting, your ballot or local campaigns? Text “Election” to THE CITY’s team at (718) 215-9011 to get answers, or email us at ask@thecity.nyc with “Election” in the subject line.

  • New Yorkers have until May 31 to submit the names of loved ones to MISSING THEM, THE CITY’s COVID-19 memorial project; send a note to memorial@thecity.nyc. May 31 is also the last day to see the MISSING THEM photo exhibit in The Bronx and Queens, a glimpse of which you can see on our TikTok page.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Friday's Weather Rating: 5/10. We're back to what early spring is normally like around here. Mostly cloudy skies with intermittent showers expected throughout the day. High temps reach the lower 50s, but it's feeling a bit more damp. The vibes are hanging in there!!

THE KICKER: “It was such a weird strong feeling. It didn’t feel like an earthquake — it wasn’t side to side, the floor moved up and down.” — An interview with a New Yorker who experienced The Big Shake at One Vanderbilt this week, from Curbed.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Friday.

Love,
THE CITY
