Dear New Yorkers, You’ve probably already heard about what’s going on with our former president from Jamaica Estates. So, some other news from around the boroughs … It’s been three years since summer camps were cut off from public pools when COVID struck. And they’re still high and dry when it comes to finding an affordable place to get kids swimming. THE CITY spoke with camp directors who used to rely on the city’s outdoor public pools, where they rented access for their kids for a fee — but now shell out four times as much, tens of thousands of dollars a summer, to buy time at indoor private pools. As the summer draws closer, day camp directors still don’t know where their kids will make a splash — or how they’ll pay for it. “We are still stuck in this limbo of the unknown,” said Alana Tilman, director of Young Judaea Sprout Brooklyn Day Camp. “I reach out to Parks all the time and they continue to push back the timeline of when — or if — they’re going to make the decision.” Read more here. Some other items of note: The state gave a license to The Cannabis Place to sell legal marijuana, and promised to help find a place for the new business’ physical store. But nearly two months after the license was issued, the business is still without a location. Would-be shop operators say the state Dormitory Authority is rejecting locations deemed too close to its own competing state-leased storefronts. How do city streets get new names? And how can you change your block’s sign to honor a local? Here’s our guide on how to get a New York street renamed. (Heads up: You’ll need signoff from the community board, the City Council and the mayor.) It’s a question New Yorkers have confronted many different ways amid the pandemic: How do you understand something that’s everywhere, but invisible to the naked eye? Dr. Steven Thrasher, a curator of the Viruses on Film series screening at BAM through Thursday, breaks it down on the latest episode of THE CITY’s FAQ NYC podcast. We’re just getting started covering the 2023 City Council elections (Primary Day is June 27!) and we want to make our reporting better with your help.
