KurdDAO and KCHR are working with the Kurdish RedCrescent (Heyva Sor) to help people affected by the disaster in Kurdistan, Turkeyand Syria. We have growing concern over reports emerging that, in the midst ofimmeasurable human tragedy, the Turkish and Syrian governments have seized fundsand equipment, prevented them from reaching the victims of the catastrophe, andactively obstructed aid and relief efforts. In order to be able to save lives as quickly and effectively as possible, we havedecided to support Heyva Sor, an organization with extensive experience in how tooperate in extreme situations at the necessary scale. Their dedication tohumanitarian relief, regardless of sectarian differences, is genuine and proven.Note: If there is interest in donating to other cryptocurrencies, please join ourTelegram group, we will create an anonymous survey in a few days to prioritizethe creation of additional wallets.BackgroundOn the night of 6 February 2023, an earthquake measuring 7.8 and a subsequentaftershock of 7.7 with epicenters in Maras (Kahramanmaras) and Dîlok (Gaziantep)caused the collapse of thousands of buildings in the middle of the night. A weeklater, the total number of victims and material losses caused by the disastercontinues to rise. As of February 13, more than 37,000 people have died under therubble of collapsed buildings. The worst affected regions in both Turkey andSyria are majority Kurds. The epicenter was in northwestern Kurdistan, inside Turkey.80% of the population is Sunni Kurds and Alevis, with sizable populations ofArabs, Turks, Syriacs, and Syrian and Afghan refugees. Before the earthquake thisregion was suffering heavily from war and political repression against Kurds andother minorities. In Turkey, the risks of such a catastrophe had been known forsome time. Many engineers, geologists and planners have for years begged thegovernment to address the danger, but the construction, not meeting even the mostbasic safety standards, has continued unabated. The Turkish government hasdeclared a state of emergency and filters all humanitarian aid arriving in theregion through AFAD (Presidency for Disaster and Emergency Management). Over thepast week there have been numerous reports of donations of funds and materialsbeing seized by the government and relief operations being delayed or hamperedwithout explanation and against the advice of engineers and aid workers on theground. Furthermore, under the cover of chaos, an intense crackdown by both stateforces and government-backed paramilitaries against journalists, Kurdishpoliticians, refugees and prisoners is taking place. With the government unableor unwilling to help, the Kurdish solidarity community is organizing itself torescue all victims of the tragedy, regardless of their ethnicity or politicalaffiliation. In Syria, people from the Arab-Kurdish autonomous regions ofnortheastern Syria (Rojava) have collected donations; today a convoy of 52 trucksdestined for Aleppo and the occupied Kurdish region of Afrin was allowed to passthrough rebel-held areas. While the governments of Syria and Turkey areexploiting this disaster by denying basic human rights to Kurds and otherminorities, the Kurdish people are taking matters into their own hands, upholdingthe faith in peace and equality for all even in these dark times. As KurdDAO, wesee an opportunity and a duty to help. In addition to urgently needed reliefequipment, clothing, blankets, tents, food and medical supplies, there is a needfor people around the world to pay attention to what is happening on the ground. We must work together to tell the true story of victims and survivors, to holdthe governments of Turkey and Syria accountable, and to ensure that aid isdelivered to all people who need it quickly, effectively and indiscriminately. Atthis critical time we must seek alternative ways to fund recovery efforts asofficial channels are failing. These alternative methods can allocate resourcesdirectly to related organizations such as KCHR and Heyva Sor.https://www.sicilialibertaria.it/_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.ca
