And if access to safe abortions is as difficult as weexperience in Germany and especially in Trier and the surrounding area,then it is no wonder that unwanted pregnant women feel controlled and atthe mercy of others. As different as their reasons for terminating thepregnancy may be, they are equally faced with Sections 218 and 219 ofthe Criminal Code. They are all forced to make this deeply personaldecision in the face of a law that prohibits and criminalizes theiractions if they do not follow the state's rules.
