Goeienavond beste lezer, “Gelukkige gezinnen lijken allemaal op elkaar, maar elk ongelukkig gezin is ongelukkig op zijn eigen manier”: de openingszin van de roman Anna Karenina, al bijna 150 jaar oud, wordt nog altijd veel geciteerd, en ik moest eraan denken toen ik het interview las met psychologieprofessor Ann Buysse. Omdat die het tegendeel stelt: gelukkige gezinnen kunnen er heel verschillend uitzien. “Ik heb veel onderzoek gedaan naar gezinnen, in al hun vormen: adoptie- en donorgezinnen, gescheiden gezinnen en nieuw samengestelde, alleenstaande ouders en ouders die wel of niet een biologische band hebben met hun kinderen”, vertelt ze, en ze merkte daarbij dat veel mensen zich schuldig voelen omdat ze niet beantwoorden aan de zogenaamde norm van het kerngezin. “Ik wilde elk van die verhalen bestaansrecht geven. Er zijn veel manieren om het goed te doen.” Al hangt dat goede samenleven wel aaneen van eindeloze variaties op hetzelfde, schetst Buysse met veel liefde. “Elk jaar naar dezelfde plek op reis gaan, elke zondag kip eten: het zijn rituelen die tonen dat je die kleine gemeenschap, of die groep, belangrijk vindt. Om te tonen wat er is tussen ons.” In een van Buysses onderzoeken typeerde een jonge vrouw de band met haar stiefvader: “‘Ik denk dat hij mij wel belangrijk vindt, want hij haalt alleen koffiekoeken als ik er ben.’ Veel ouders zijn bang dat, als ze gaan scheiden, het minder goed wordt voor hun kinderen. Terwijl de essentie van alles is: zien we elkaar?” Mooie zondagavond verder - idealiter met in de keuken nog een halve koffiekoek die je beter vandaag opeet dan morgen. |
