WORLD WORLDWIDE BRAZIL - news journal UPDATE - (en) Brazil, UNIPA: 60 years of the 64 coup and the PTista conciliation! (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

On this April 1st, we remember that 60 years ago the military, supported
by Brazilian elites, reactionary sectors and Yankee imperialism, managed
to carry out a coup d'état and established a bloodthirsty and violent
military dictatorship. ---- We know the role that the military played in
the Brazilian Republic. Despite a popular republican movement, it was
the military who overthrew Dom Pedro II and started the Brazilian
republic in 1889 with the clear objective of preventing the republican
process from challenging the class privileges of the agrarian ruling
class of the time.
However, there were several moments when military sectors rose up
against their superiors. The Chibata revolt, tenentismo, Coluna Prestes,
are examples of how military discipline found resistance in the lower
layers of the armed forces at the time.

However, the coup of 64 realigned internal discipline on the right. This
means that after the coup of 64, democratic and socialist soldiers were
persecuted within the armed forces. More than 6,500 soldiers were
persecuted and expelled from the Navy, Army and Air Force. If they
persecuted their "colleagues in uniform", what they did to society was
pure barbarity.

Movements such as the Peasant League were made illegal and their leaders
were persecuted, hundreds of people were arrested without prosecution,
around 8,350 indigenous people were murdered by the actions of the
military, torture in warehouses, battalions and in the basements of the
dictatorship. These persecutions, especially in the countryside, allowed
the agrarian structure, with the concentration of land in the hands of a
few, to remain. Thus, this structure, the absence of agrarian reform, is
a legacy of the military dictatorship.

Despite the strong and heroic armed resistance, in several armed groups
inspired by the Cuban experience, the military remained even stronger
and brutally dismantled all attempts at resistance, where much of the
militancy came from the student movement, from the UNE of the time,
which fought bravely to overthrow the military dictatorship.

Redemocratization and Lula/PT conciliation

Brazilian redemocratization was once again a concession from the
military. Therefore, unlike other redemocratization processes in our
Latin America, the military did not pay for its crimes against the
Brazilian people, on the contrary. The amnesty law allowed the armed
forces to continue granting promotions to these criminals.

The PT is a party that was born during the dictatorship and drives
movements against it. However, after 3 governments of this party in
control of the bourgeois State, the punishment of the dictatorship's
torturers did not progress, the military's tutelage remains, allowing
only the "Truth Commission" that managed to expose the dictatorship's
crimes, but without punishment. Now, Lula/PT has banned the Minister of
Human Rights, Silvio Almeida, from carrying out acts that would remind
those "persecuted by the dictatorship". A severe blow that makes it
difficult to block the Armed Forces and hold agents involved in
persecution and torture accountable.

Lula/PT's action is yet another symptom of class conciliation that
affects his party and which accepts without fighting the military's
tutelage over the Brazilian State and their permission for the PT to
continue governing.

Punishment now for all the regime's torturers!
Dictatorship never again!
Socialism or barbarism!
