Another agriculture is possible in another possible and concrete world
where the production of food, in the process that starts from the land
and reaches the plate, that is, in the various phases of production,
transformation, marketing, up to the final consumer, both in in the
hands of self-organised territorial communities, and production is free
from the logic of a capitalist market controlled by agro-industries,
multinationals and large-scale organized distribution. ---- Throughout
Europe, farmers are in a state of agitation: production costs are
growing, especially those of the technical means provided by capitalist
industry, while the value of the goods produced is decreasing as they
are purchased below cost and transformed by capitalist agroindustry and
then marketed by large-scale organized distribution. Thus many small and
medium-sized businesses, often family-run, risk bankruptcy. In fact, a
process of proletarianization is underway, that is, small agricultural
entrepreneurs crushed by the laws of the global market are becoming
simple manual laborers of the land, while banks and agro-industries are
becoming owners of their land. The same thing happened to small artisans
and small traders.
Wealth is becoming increasingly concentrated in a few hands, those of
the rich who are becoming richer and richer, while medium and small
entrepreneurs are becoming increasingly poorer. The socio-economic
conditions are being created that are leading to the creation of a
pyramid-type society, where at the top there is 1% of the super rich and
at the bottom 99% of the poor. It seems like an irreversible process,
yet we are the 99%.
The right, meaning by right all the parties and movements that carry out
economic and social policies dictated by the principles and rules of the
neoliberal-capitalist culture, is now trying to blow on the protest and
exploit it, proposing fake solutions. In reality, on the one hand his
policies favor large companies, on the other, with cuts in financing and
taxation, they damage medium and small businesses. The problem is
precisely the right-wing politics carried out at the municipal,
regional, national and European government level, but the blame is
placed only on European policies, on a government that is physically
distant, which is intended as a scapegoat for the inability to meet the
requests and needs of farmers. Who in turn, however, must become aware
that there is another way of doing agriculture. An agriculture that does
not lead to indiscriminate exploitation of the land without respect for
the environment, which is not based on the exploitation of people and
self-exploitation, but which is instead clean and respectful of living
beings and the environment, which maintains biodiversity, that is,
peasant agriculture which also plays a social and cultural role, which
is a territorial defense against the depopulation of internal and
marginal areas, which contributes to combating the phenomenon of fires
and hydrogeological instability.
Meanwhile, the protest has been going on for more than thirty days with
farmers protesting in various parts of Sicily, but the media spotlight
has gone out and the struggle is no longer news but continues to the
bitter end.
