The use of the term "rearmament" seven times during his New Year's Eve
greetings by Emmanuel Macron was not just an effect of style. It was
indeed the mark of a desire to be part of a warlike narrative. ----
Faced with growing opposition to his anti-social policy, Macron, without
a majority to govern, is seeking to adopt a regal posture. If we can
challenge the President, we cannot challenge the head of the Armed
Forces. It is also a way of retaining an electorate that is conservative
and nostalgic for past greatness. "Economic rearmament", "rearmament of
the State", "civic rearmament", "industrial rearmament" or "rearmament
of the Nation", or even "demographic rearmament", all of this has a
rancid aftertaste of vichysm. Just as much as Gabriel Attal's "road map"
which smacks of the extreme right as mentioned in "the implementation of
the announced rearmament and regeneration project".
Macron has since taken another step forward by suggesting that French
troops could be engaged on the Ukrainian front. The President dreams of
being a war leader. Besides its mobilizing effects, war is good
business, and France is not doing too badly. Over the period 2019-2023
it will become the second largest arms exporter in the world, ahead of
Russia. An industry strongly supported by the State which employs no
less than 900 civil servants!
While the social breakdown continues and accelerates in the name of
controlling deficits, we must refuse and denounce this warlike logic and
wage the only war that is worth it: the social war against the
bourgeoisie and its lackeys. UCL, March 23, 2024
