We are pleased to announce that the 16th edition of the Balkan Anarchist
Bookfair will be held in Prishtina, Kosovo from 5th to 7th July 2024.
BAB is a platform to promote books, exchange information and ideas,
create new initiatives and strengthen organizations. BAB has represented
solidarity, resistance and collaboration in the Balkans for over 20
years. ---- BAB arrives at a crucial moment, when capital is going
through a crisis, the fires of war are spreading across the world and
fascism is spreading. States are becoming more militarized and
populations are increasingly policed, separating communities and bonds
of solidarity. With any type of oppressed dissent, capital runs freely,
always expanding to new sources of exploitation.
The Balkans are no exception. We are witnessing the increasing
militarization of Balkan countries, with ever-increasing stockpiles of
weapons and technologies. National interest and racial nationalism have
been used to justify more oppressive methods of population control,
which often harm ethnic, social and political minorities. Political
power has been concentrated and political repression has become more
open. Political organizations were weakened by the creation of NGOs,
reflecting the logic of neoliberalism.
At the same time, patriarchy creates a hostile environment for everyone,
especially women and the LGBTQI+ community. There are more and more
cases of women being killed and attacked, and this happens in public and
private. This same patriarchal logic also leads to religious extremism,
which makes the situation worse.
The Balkans are important in global politics. NATO and Russia have great
influence there. The region was also affected by neoliberal reforms.
These reforms gave access to international capital, mainly from the EU,
China and Turkey. This led to control of public infrastructure by these
countries. The Balkans are connected to international markets and are
now also connected to controlling population and movement for the
benefit of capital. The Balkans are becoming a base for migrant control,
with detention centers like the one planned in Albania on behalf of Italy.
As anarchists, we always work across borders, create solidarity and
resist oppression. Today, we need to find our strength and respond to
oppression.
We call on anarchist publishers and initiatives, as well as all
international anarchist and anti-authoritarian movements from the
Balkans and other countries to plan their participation in BAB2024 in
Prishtina. We invite all interested people and groups to participate in
organizing the event.
