WORLD WORLDWIDE US USA - New York NY - New York City NYC - the city THE CITY - How to get SNAP benefits, the watermelon king of Bed-Stuy
Dear New Yorkers,
If you’re a New Yorker having a hard time putting food on the table, you’re not alone — and more people qualify for help than you may think.
In the last twelve months, one out of every four New Yorkers reported being food insecure, meaning they had limited or uncertain access to adequate nutrition.
Despite the overwhelming need for food assistance in New York City, advocates say that the stigma and shame around receiving food benefits stop eligible people from even applying.
This summer, for the first time, New York is also participating in the Summer EBT program, which provides low-income families with school-age kids additional food benefits during the months when schools are closed.
Read THE CITY’s guide on SNAP benefits — which also includes some information about other food programs — for advice on how to make the application process easier.
Monday’s Weather Rating: 3/10. Guess what? It’s hot and humid again. High temperatures reach the low 90s and dew points are in the 70s once again. The vibes are uncomfortable … again.
Wednesday, July 10: The annual Jazz Jam All-Stars Concert returns to Flushing Town Hall in Queens. Tickets are $15-25, and the show starts at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, July 10: Catch an outdoor screening of “Barbie,” one of last summer’s hit films. Free from 9 to 11:30 p.m. at WNYC Transmitter Park in Brooklyn.
Saturday, July 13: Civic Speakeasy, an event series hosted by Lincoln Center and Citizen University dedicated to strengthening civic culture in communities through art. Free at 6 p.m., at The Underground at Jaffe Drive in Lincoln Center in Manhattan.
THE KICKER: New York native Miki Sudo set a record in the women’s division of the Coney Island hot dog eating contest last Thursday by eating 51 hot dogs, reports Gothamist.
Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Monday.
Love,
THE CITY
