"You cannot change the present regime when there is no revolutionary
spirit until the workers understand a few basic truths: ---- That
workers and capitalists cannot have common interests. ---- That
imperialism is the main cause of war and the cause must be eradicated.
That governments, right and left, are always instruments of oppression
and that workers must learn to do without them. ---- That political
parties seek power for their own benefit - for a small minority.
Therefore, all power must be seized and left in the hands of the
syndicates, which make up the vast majority of working-class men and women.
We cannot have a revolution until the working class gets rid of its
illusions, acceptance of bosses and belief in leaders. Our policy is to
educate him, to stimulate his class instinct, and to teach him the
methods of struggle. It is a difficult and long task, but to those who
prefer such convenient solutions as war, we would like to point out that
the great world war, which was supposed to end war and ensure democracy,
only produced fascism and more war; that this war will undoubtedly
provoke more wars, leaving the basic problems of the workers untouched.
Our way of rejecting the futile task of patching up this rotten world is
to try to build a new one, a task that is not only constructive but also
the only way out."
Marie Louise Berneri, anarchist activist and author of The Hypocrisy of
"Left" Parliamentary Politics and The Capitalist War Machine. December,
