In Serbia, the situation for stray dogs is dire and heartbreaking. Each day, thousands of dogs are abandoned, left to fend for themselves in harsh conditions. There are an estimated 20,000 stray dogs in Belgrade alone, and the problem extends far beyond the city limits, affecting rural and urban areas alike. Many of these dogs suffer from neglect, starvation, and abuse. 

The lack of public awareness about responsible pet ownership, combined with inadequate governmental support, means that these animals are left to survive on the streets, often facing cruelty or death by disease, starvation, or abuse.

Your Generosity Saved Lives Before. Can You Help Us Again?

Thanks to your unwavering support, Animals First Aid, in partnership with OAZA, has been able to make a significant impact. OAZA currently cares for over 150 dogs, providing them with food, shelter, and medical care. This shelter has become a sanctuary for these abandoned animals, but the challenges are immense. Recently, OAZA began constructing a protective fence around the shelter to secure the dogs from external dangers and prevent them from wandering back into the streets. However, we need approximately €2,000 more to complete this critical project . The fence is not just a barrier; it is a symbol of hope and safety for these dogs who have known only suffering and fear.

Over the past months, we’ve helped feed and rescue hundreds of dogs, providing them with the care and protection they desperately need. OAZA has been at the forefront of this mission, tirelessly working to create a safe haven for these dogs. To reiterate, this fence is more than just a physical barrier; it represents security and a new beginning for every dog within its bounds. However, the project remains incomplete, and we cannot finish it without your continued support.

In addition to our work with OAZA, Jelena Sanctuary is also in urgent need. Jelena has been tirelessly caring for abandoned dogs for years, providing a safe refuge where they can heal and find hope. Recently, four new puppies were dumped near Jelena’s shelter, and like many others, they are in desperate need of vaccinations to protect them from deadly diseases. Jelena needs around €300 to vaccinate these new arrivals and the many other dogs under her care.

Jelena’s Animal Sanctuary in Serbia is a dedicated refuge for a wide variety of animals, including 90 dogs, 20 cats, 7 sheep, 2 pigs, and 2 goats. The sanctuary is committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals that have been abandoned or abused. Despite the challenges of operating in an environment where many dogs and cats live in extremely poor conditions—often chained or kept in small enclosures—Jelena continues to provide a safe haven for these animals.
