The ecodependence of human beings, and therefore of the social,
political and economic systems that sustain them, explains the profoundeffects of the climate and ecosystem crisis that have long coexisted
with us and that are here to stay. ---- The metabolism of Capitalist
Modernity depends excessively on fossil energy that feeds the transport
of all kinds of goods and, therefore, the great global market. The peaks
of profitable extraction of oil and many other materials essential for
the party to continue announce the end of an ecocidal and genocidal
social model that has no energy alternative to feed it, not even a Planet B.
We must seriously and urgently question our
way of life and consumption, because it is our social organization
and the way in which we make, or are made for us, economic and political
decisions that has brought us
here. The answers we find must be
free from capitalist reality and built on transformative
foundations that allow us to recover collective autonomy and
self-management to decide in a radically democratic
way what, how and in what way we
produce, consume and relate to our environment.
We know that due to the complexity of the society
built by Capitalist Modernity, implementing the necessary
changes is really difficult. For this to be possible, it is necessary to
collectively
build the necessary social autonomy that allows the population that
makes up a community to satisfy all its needs
outside the market and without dependence on the state.
Seizing the means of production by controlling the
knowledge necessary to use simple and local technologies
(made with local materials and energies) would enable decentralized
production with smaller facilities closer to the place where consumption is
made, allowing citizens to have more possibilities to democratically
control resources.
Social sovereignty also involves eliminating wages and
commodities from the logic of work, turning it into
subsistence economies rather than precarious ones.
Economies that are based on the concept of the
irreducible minimum, the equality of unequals and the ethics of
complementarity, as was done in some
pre-capitalist societies, can be the support of
communities that begin the correct path towards
Democratic Modernity.
The linearity of the capitalist economy leads it to
the precipice of history, which is why integrating the
human economy within ecosystems so that it is
truly circular can only be done through
agroecology, which is not only concerned with how a food has
been produced, but also takes into account
the relations of production that have made it possible.
This means returning to practices and lives that are closer and
connected with nature, putting food sovereignty into practice. Social
and food autonomy are not possible without
energy sovereignty. Just like the others, it must close ecological
cycles and the best
way to do this is to generate and consume it locally.
This requires technology and energy that is truly renewable
and emancipatory, distributed, diversified and radically
democratic.
In order for the paradigm shift to occur and for a new society to emerge
from
the collapse of capitalism that puts life at the center, it is necessary to
start building in parallel and from below, locally and
collectively, the popular institutions that must
sustain the transformation.
In the meantime, we must live with the current system and
at the same time try to fight it by defending
our territories and bodies. The struggles that seek to
lighten the burden that neoliberalism places on us
are not negligible nor should they be ignored, quite the opposite.
There is room for the defense of public education and health, the right
to housing, anti-fascism or the most combative unionism.
But we must not forget that making capitalist society more pleasant does
not solve the problem.
We need a true social revolution and this can only be ecological and
feminist, it is only possible by building on the abolition of hierarchy
and domination and with the full and collective awareness that we are,
whether we like it or not, eco-dependent beings.
