Remembering the genocide of the Yazidis 10 years ago ---- The Free
Workers' Union Freiburg - Union for All Professions condemns the
invasion of Turkish troops in Iraq. Our solidarity and compassion go out
to the people of the Assyrian and Kurdish communities in northern Iraq.
This renewed military escalation by the Turkish state in the war against
the Kurdish population and their self-determination must stop.
The Turkish invasion of Iraq must be stopped
Largely ignored by the international press and politics, the Turkish
army has occupied large parts of the Iraqi-Kurdish province of Dohuk and
border areas belonging to the province of Erbil since mid-June. The
Turkish forces are also using Syrian-Islamist militias, including the
so-called Islamic State. In total, over 600 Kurdish and Assyrian
localities are affected by the Turkish invasion, and almost 200 villages
have already been evacuated. The attacks are also directed against
civilian infrastructure. According to a media report by Neues
Deutschland, a school and an Assyrian church were hit. By the end of
July, over 6000 hectares of agricultural land had been destroyed or
severely damaged by the Turkish attacks.
Solidarity with Rojava
The bombing of civilian infrastructure in northern Syria must stop At
the same time, we condemn the ongoing attacks and bombings by Turkey in
the territory of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria -
Rojava, and the systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure, such
as power plants and hospitals. Our solidarity goes out to the victims of
this military aggression and to the people who tirelessly fight for
peaceful coexistence among the ethnic and religious groups in the region
and for the social revolution on an ecological and feminist basis.
Anniversary: Remembering the genocide of the Yazidis
Ten years ago, on August 3, 2014, Islamist ISIS fighters attacked the
northern Iraqi region around the city of Sinjar, a main settlement area
of the ethnic Yazidi minority. According to the UN, between 5000 and
10,000 Yazidis were murdered, and over 7000 Yazidi women and children
were abducted. Men were killed, boys were used as child soldiers, and
women and girls were loaded onto buses, older women were killed, and the
rest were sold into slavery and systematically raped and abused.
Previously, the Peshmerga had withdrawn from the area, leaving the
population defenseless. We remember that fighters of the Yazidi
self-defense HPS, with the support of the Kurdish YPG and PKK, came to
the aid of those affected, fought to create an escape corridor, and thus
saved up to 30,000 Yazidis from further atrocities.
