Yesterday, August 19, families living in Parque União, a community in
Maré, in the northern part of the city of Rio de Janeiro, woke up to the
eviction action, carried out by a joint operation by Governor Cláudio
Castro and Mayor Eduardo Paes. ---- The agencies responsible for
evicting the families were the State Department of Civil Police and the
Municipal Department of Public Order, with support from the Special
Operations Command - PMERJ and the Expressway Policing Battalion.
The state authorities criminalized the families, claiming that the
properties were built to "launder" money. But the truth is that the
operation denies the people their fundamental right to housing.
The angry residents protested by closing nearby streets and were
violently repressed with rubber bullets.
Today, the civil and military police continue operations in the Maré
communities, using caveirões in Parque União, Rubens Vaz, Nova Holanda
and Parque Maré.
The government denies the rights of the poor, black and working people
on a daily basis. We cannot accept this violence in silence.
For our right to housing!
Only the people can save the people.
