WORLD WORLDWIDE US USA New York NY - New York City NYC - THE CITY - NYC’s bright future as an AI hotspot
Dear New Yorkers,
The city is emerging as a hotspot for artificial intelligence.
This December, events company Society 32, will hold its ninth AI summit in Manhattan. It’s expected to attract 4,000 attendees, up 15% from last year, as technologists and executives from a wide range of industries try to figure out how AI will affect their businesses.
The conference is just one example of how NYC is rising as the nation’s second most important center for what is known as generative AI.
The city boasts scores of startups. Big tech companies like Google are centering much of their AI research here, and universities are deeply committed. In addition, the Adams administration is trying to claim for New York the mantle as the most aggressive city implementing AI.

Monday's Weather Rating: 8/10. A great start, with high temperatures in the upper 70s and manageable dew points. Partly sunny early with some increasing clouds and slowly rising humidity later. Still, the vibes are pretty dang good out there for now!!

Late Saturday evening, Eric Adams’ chief counsel Lisa Zornberg, abruptly resigned without explanation. A review from THE CITY found that Zornberg and Tim Pearson, one of Adams’ top advisors whose phone was seized just days ago by the FBI, met at least four times to discuss “asylum seeker crisis contracts.” At least one of the meetings last year appears to have been quite urgent. On Oct. 13th, Pearson’s schedule noted: “Lisa Zornberg — meeting with you needed ASAP.”
Ex-NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban, who resigned last week in the face of federal probes, quietly reduced the suggested punishment for cops found guilty of various offenses just before he quit, THE CITY was first to report.
The number of homeless youth — individuals between the ages of 16 and 24 — who were denied shelter in the city shot up this year, with more than 1,100 young people sent back to the streets between January and July of 2024, new data shows. The historically high number is being driven in part by the asylum-seeker crisis and the expiring of federal oversight, advocates say.
Federal authorities are zeroing in on a Florida technology company that hired Terence Banks, the brother of Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks and Schools Chancellor David Banks. The intensified scrutiny follows THE CITY’s report on how Saferwatch retained Terence Banks’ “government relations” consulting firm while it was seeking a contract for its emergency alert app in the city’s public schools.
