Dear New Yorkers,

Yesterday, THE CITY broke the news that federal authorities had raided the homes of three of Mayor Eric Adams’ top aides — First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, Deputy Mayor for Criminal Justice Phil Banks and Schools Chancellor David Banks.

It didn’t end there.

On Thursday, the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office seized the cell phones of Police Commissioner Edward Caban and Tim Pearson, one of Adams’ closest confidantes.

This extraordinary moment radically broadened the federal investigations into the mayor and his inner circle, which previously swept up his chief fundraiser and other key aides.

Adams spoke briefly with reporters as he left City Hall on Thursday afternoon. “The goal is to follow the law and that is what this administration always stood for and what we’re going to continue to stand for,” he said.

When asked if he thought his staff followed the law, given multiple investigations, Adams said: “I have confidence in the team, the team here. We’re going to follow the rules and comply with any questions that are asked of us.”

THE CITY will continue reporting on what this means for New York City and its government.

  • Years after Lloyd Haynes was freed from Rikers after THE CITY’s reporting on his medical plight, the Brooklyn man is accusing the Department of Correction of dragging its feet on his negligence lawsuit. When Haynes sued the city for failing to give him proper medical care, his lawyer asked jail officials for their policy on when people behind bars with serious health conditions get sent to a hospital. Nearly four years later, they are still waiting for the response.
