Extreme Weather, Brutal Injuries & Urgent Care Needed: Help Us Save South Africa’s Equines

Dear friends,

Today, as South Africa experiences an unprecedented snowfall in November—despite it not being winter—for the first time in 85 years, we are called to rally for those most affected by this severe weather—the vulnerable animals.

Animals First Aid is an IRS-designated 501(c)(3) charitable organization (tax ID# 99-1042428), with a public charity status under Section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi). We are qualified to receive tax-deductible bequests, devises, transfers, or gifts under Sections 2055, 2106, or 2522.

This anomaly, echoing recent floods in Spain and Greece, highlights a larger issue: the devastating impact of our changing climate on animals who are helpless in the face of these changes. It is these animals, our equine companions, who urgently need us to act now.

In partnership with Blindlove, an organization deeply committed to animal welfare in South Africa, Animals First Aid (AFA) has been working tirelessly to rescue, treat, and care for these suffering animals. The severe weather compounds the challenges they face, like in the recent heartbreaking case of a donkey that Blindlove discovered last week. This poor soul had been struck above the eye with a sharp object, causing a deep, life-threatening wound and a piece of broken skull. Dr. Annie from iThemba Wildlife and Conservation Services quickly took action, administering anesthesia to carefully remove the shattered bone fragment and clean the wound.

The donkey’s journey to recovery has been carefully overseen by Dr. Annie, whose dedication gives us hope amid the suffering. After the initial treatment, she performed a follow-up a week later, sedating him once more to give the wound a thorough clean. With gentle precision, she applied long-acting antibiotics and sent anti-inflammatories home with the owner to ensure the donkey’s ongoing relief. Though the road ahead is still uncertain, Dr. Annie is hopeful that he may retain the use of his eye. She plans another follow-up visit to assess his healing, a testament to her relentless commitment to these animals who have endured so much pain. We are incredibly grateful to her for the care and compassion she provides each day.

While individual rescues are powerful, the need extends far beyond a single animal. With unprecedented weather patterns, horses and donkeys across South Africa are enduring brutal conditions. Temperatures recently plummeted to -12°C, leaving working horses without shelter or grazing. Together with Blindlove, AFA is on the frontlines, securing feed, medical care, and essential resources for these animals. But our ability to respond quickly and effectively depends on your support.

With our recent tax-exempt status (USA), Animals First Aid can now extend its global impact in South Africa even further. Every dollar you contribute goes directly to saving lives, with funds channeled efficiently into Blindlove’s outreach missions, which bring essential veterinary care, food, and shelter to horses and donkeys in the most remote and underserved regions.

Our past appeals have brought attention to cases like Mouse, a donkey suffering from a maggot-infested ear infection, who found new life thanks to the care he received through our partnership. Each animal we save is a testament to the power of compassion and the difference our community can make. Your donations have sustained these life-saving efforts, and today, they are needed more than ever.

Will you stand with us once again?
