The latest survey by the STEM agency showed that 1/3 of adults consider
the communist regime better than the current capitalist one. Less than
half of the population has a unequivocally positive perception of the
current situation. Opinions differ significantly according to the age of
the respondents, adults under thirty who have not experienced communism
rate the current capitalist regime as better more often. However, the
new data show that people with direct experience of the communist regime
evaluate the present much more critically than the generation under
thirty. People have long been dissatisfied with the functioning of
democracy in the Czech Republic. "Criticism was also present in previous
periods, especially deepening in times of political crises. Now
dissatisfaction is also high, reaching sixty percent.
Moreover, the STEM agency tended to ask questions in terms of
"democratic freedom" and "unfree communism", instead of identifying the
current regime precisely as capitalist. In any case, the current survey
shows that people who lived and worked under state socialism, and above
all from the ranks of workers, criticize the present precisely because
of existential need and uncertainty. The young generation has not
experienced social security and stable work, on the contrary, it is
systematically indoctrinated "how democracy is cool (even if they mean
capitalism) and haunted by the horrors of the previous regime. However,
this will ultimately only be possible for a part of this generation, the
one that will find out what it is to be working poor, will finally prove
their parents and grandparents right.
What are the lessons for the anarchist movement? Realizing that we need
to stop being ashamed of being anarchist communists. Start saying it out
loud, and getting louder, explaining what anarchist communism is and how
such a society would work. Emphasize the difference between state
(Marxist) and anarchist communism. To show people that if they thought
state communism was better than the current regime, that anarchist
communism is an even better social system, because it will be the people
themselves who will manage society and their jobs (instead of
bureaucrats from the communist party), that they will gain not only
greater social security, but real genuine social well-being and the most
complete freedom to determine their lives and the course of society.
