Appeal for the freedom of Maysoon Majidi and all the people deprived of
their freedom while they were on the run to find her ---- TheKurdish-Iranian activist Maysoon Majidi has been detained for 9 months
on charges of smuggling in Calabrian prisons; in Castrovillari until
July 5, then she is transferred to the prison of Reggio Calabria. ----
In view of the hearing that will be held on 18/9 in Crotone, we relaunch
this appeal for mobilization and unity to all those entities and
individuals who care about their own and others' freedom.
Maysoon's case is not an isolated one, rather it is an emblematic case
of the current situation. In addition to Marjam Jamali, an Iranian woman
also detained - since the end of October 2023 - for smuggling who was
granted house arrest at the end of June pending trial, hundreds of
people are arrested every year on this charge and therefore thousands
are unjustly detained since the introduction of this crime (see art. 12
of the consolidated text on immigration known as TUI or also Bossi-Fini
Law).
Furthermore, since March 2023 the Cutro Decree has increased the
penalties for these alleged smugglers, placing the responsibility for
the death and suffering of passengers on them.
To date, the government has a great interest in identifying a
"smuggler", real or presumed, in every boat that arrives in Italy, in
order to be able to flaunt the effectiveness of its policies against
illegal immigration. It matters little whether these people are women
with minor children in tow like Marjam, artists and women's rights
activists like Maysoon or frightened teenagers who have been given a
rudder by someone. What matters to those in power is to make propaganda
and publish statistics on the number of people arrested for smuggling.
With this appeal we therefore want to expand and strengthen the network
of solidarity created around Maysoon, who fled to escape the repression
of the regime in her country and ended up in the clutches of repression
in Italy. The battle for her release corresponds to that for the freedom
of Marjam and all the other alleged smugglers in prison in this
increasingly security-based country, where the prisons are already
overflowing even without the addition of these people arrested on the
basis of a fictitious crime.
It is important to reiterate, in addition to the lack of involvement in
the facts contested and therefore the innocence of Maysoon and Marjam,
that we are against blaming the people who actually drove the boats
because, despite the closed borders, the need to leave the country
remains. For people without economic resources, it sometimes becomes
necessary to offer to drive the boats, in view of a possible way out.
These people on the run, oppressed if not persecuted, become "the
smugglers" for European governments and taken as a public scapegoat. We
want the complete demolition of the border system, of its mentality and
its methods and, for this reason, we call for a fight for freedom that
is generalized and concrete, outside of practices aimed at identifying a
truly guilty person or taking advantage of a stage to show one's flag,
while those who migrate remain in prison, in CPRs, in hotspots and in
other detention and torture centers, awaiting trial or expulsion.
We relaunch the mobilization for the abolition of the Cutro decree and
the crime of smuggling in the TUI, for the liberation of Marjam and
Maysoon and for the possibility of welcoming with dignity in Italy those
who arrive because forced by the state of necessity.
Embracing the cause of these people for their freedom and also for ours,
we invite you to take part in the demonstration at the court of Crotone.
The hearing of the Maysoon trial will be held on October 1st; in front
of the court there will be a demonstration of all the associations and
individuals who want to participate.
