In Syracuse the so-called G7 will meet to talk about agriculture and
fishing, with their representatives who perhaps have never set foot in acultivated field or on a fishing boat. ---- With proclamations and big
words (such as sustainability, etc.) that have no meaning in their
mouths, they claim to solve the problems that they themselves have
created. It is clear that they are not acting in the interests of
farmers and fishermen, but of multinationals and agribusiness companies,
as they have always done. ---- Yet it would be enough for them to step
aside and leave farmers and fishermen free to do their work, without
interference and without manipulation.
That is:
1) free access to land. Land (like water or the air we breathe) is a
common good and cannot be denied to those who want to work it.
2) farmers must be able to decide what to grow, how to grow and to whom
to sell their products, without being ordered from above.
3) Every farmer must be able to use his own seeds and exchange them
freely with other farmers, as has been the case for millennia, and not
be forced to buy them exclusively from multinational seed companies.
4) small farms, whether family-run or not, must be able to produce and
sell their products freely, without useless and absurd bureaucracies.
We must recognize the high social value of those who cultivate the land
and support them in every way.
5) put an end to the phenomenon of land grabbing, or the grabbing of
land by large companies both in Europe and in the rest of the world, and
put an end to the exploitation of natural resources, first and foremost
water, which is increasingly passing into private hands.
We have nothing to ask of these gentlemen, both because we do not
recognize any power in them and they do not enjoy any respect, and
because we do not believe that they have the fate of those who cultivate
the land at heart.
Instead, we call on all farmers to organize and free themselves from the
slavery of industrial and capitalist agriculture that dictates its own
rules of exploitation, and we call on workers, the precarious, the
unemployed, the pensioners to support in every way the struggles of
farmers who are trying to escape the system.
Only together and only with this alliance is it possible to change.
