Please donate now Dear friends, Torrential rains unleashed destructive flash floods across Spain’s eastern coastline earlier this week, leaving the animals we care for devastated.   Credit: El Refugio The weather warnings came too late, and there was no time to evacuate hundreds of animals in the storm’s path. In the Valencia region, nearly a year’s worth of rain fell in just eight hours – but shelter workers were alerted to the oncoming floods too late to act. Our partners watched in horror as the rains fell and the water rose, leaving nowhere for the animals to go. As the storm worsened, flash floods and violent winds laid waste to the shelters, causing unprecedented damage and putting the lives of hundreds of terrified dogs and cats at risk. Three animal shelters in the Valencia region have been almost completely destroyed, leaving hundreds of dogs and cats in crisis. Please donate now Credit: Protectora Modepran Protectora Modepran, in the heart of the city of Valencia, is in a state of disaster. Once home to 500 dogs and 200 cats, the floods knocked down fences, toppled buildings and demolished kennels. Even worse, all their food and medical supplies were washed away, and they are scrambling to find funds for food, medicine, clean-up operations and vital repairs.  Along the coast in Sueca, Maria’s Shelter was told to evacuate, but the team refused to leave the animals to their fate. The shelter is so badly damaged that it is virtually inaccessible – much less a safe space for animals. Further inland, the Jadoul Foundation could not escape the storm’s destructive path. A massive mudslide toppled dog and cat kennels, leaving their 150 dogs and 50+ cats with nowhere to stay. As the authorities scramble to deal with the widespread damage, few are looking after the animals. The authorities are doing everything they can to save lives, but they are focusing on people. It is up to us and our supporters to help the animals.
