WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, Umanita Nova: The Anarchist Challenge. Brief Chronicle of the XXXII FAI Congress (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation

The XXXII FAI Congress took place from January 3 to 6. The Italian
Anarchist Federation celebrated its 80th anniversary and did so in
Carrara: the city that saw its birth in the aftermath of the Liberation.
The debate was structured and covered the main areas of intervention of
social and organizational anarchism in the face of capitalism, war and
state violence today. ---- The discussion once again demonstrated the
commitment of the federations, commissions and individual comrades in
the numerous struggles in the territories and on the international
level. It is impossible to exhaustively report every aspect of the
debate in this article. We will limit ourselves to a few notes on the
most important issues.

The congress debate opened by reaffirming the FAI's commitment to
antimilitarist action: an effort that has seen the Federation at the
forefront of the struggles against the militarization of schools and
universities, against arms factories, against military bases from Friuli
to Sicily, from Piedmont to Tuscany, alongside the initiatives of
workers against the war economy, against the production and trafficking
of arms, in solidarity with deserters from all wars. This positioning is
now more central than ever, in the face of the multiplication of
conflicts on a global scale and the concrete risk of a nuclear
catastrophe. There is only one way out of this spiral: to counter the
force of collective actions, consistently antimilitarist, outside of
parties and institutional control, to jam and destroy the war death
machine of bosses and governments.

Another key moment of debate was on environmental struggles. The recent
COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, was yet another demonstration of the
futility of these diplomatic conferences, as well as more generally of
the failure of governments and the absolute ineffectiveness of
delegation. The lack of substantial funding for mitigation actions was
accompanied by reversals of direction on fossil fuels and widespread
denialism that made this meeting not only completely ineffective but
also harmful. These facts unequivocally remind us of the need for
widespread commitment to direct, self-managed and bottom-up actions.
Such actions must be framed in a radical critique of the connivance
between political representation and capitalism, since global warming
and its acceleration are inextricably linked to the current political
and economic system, which proves, by its very nature, completely
incapable of implementing the necessary actions to stop the climate
catastrophe.

Another important topic of discussion was the one concerning
trans-feminist and queer criticism, to be considered in all respects as
an integral part of the anarchist struggle. The gaze carried forward by
these struggles is essential for a revolutionary process that aims at
the anarchic subversion of the social and political order in which we
are forced to live. For these reasons it is essential to multiply the
struggles and refine the reflection against patriarchy, sexism and
machismo, in a perspective that is both intersectional and overcoming
any essentialism, identity or gender binarism. These issues are proving
to be more pressing than ever today, in the face of the advance of the
identitarian and sovereign right, which is increasingly shamelessly
pursuing its project of a strong ethical state, firmly founded on
family, nation, religion and repression. This project restores absolute
centrality to the struggles in the anticlerical sphere, to be carried
out against any religious conditioning, as well as to the opposition
towards what is increasingly appearing as a real police state. The
government is in fact experimenting with new and increasingly efficient
mechanisms of exclusion and control of undesirables, through a security
crackdown that involves red zones, urban DASPOs and bills. The latest in
chronological order, DDL 1236 (ex 1660), criminalises climate, social
and trade union, anti-prison and no-border movements, inflicting long
prison sentences for banal practices of political and social struggle. A
very strong intensification of repression that goes hand in hand with a
series of protections for the police and the granting of power to the
secret services, which will be able to become part of terrorist
organisations, also trying to take control of them, in the certainty of
anonymity and impunity for the crimes committed.

FAI was born on September 19, 1945.  The veterans of exile, of the
deportation islands, of the concentration camps, of the fascist prisons,
of the war in Spain, of the Resistance, gave life to this assembly,
federalist and self-managed Federation that today turns 80.

The concrete utopia that had animated the anarchist movement in those
distant days has not aged at all and is still here before us, in all its
relevance, to question those who today find themselves facing a new
fascism, perfectly inserted in a democratic framework but no less
dangerous in its repression of dissent and in its war on the exploited.

In Carrara, the baton was once again taken up by those who had held the
dream of a different society in their hands, those who had done so in
the occupied factories, in Spain in July 1936, those who had seen
fascism born as a "preventive counter-revolution", those who had also
seen it fall, defeated as a social project and shot down with weapons in
hand.

Together with this important witness, we also inherit all the challenges
linked to it: those of a social anarchism that knows how to combine
organization and freedom, that knows how to make credible and
practicable a project of radical transformation of the existing, in a
libertarian horizon, of equality, of mutual support, of solidarity among
all the oppressed men and women of the world.
