A bet won, this is how the winter camp that just ended on the movement's
land near the American base can be considered. ---- It was not a given, considering the objective difficulties of setting up the place in a
period of harsh climate with the risk of rain and very low temperatures.
Yet the stubbornness of the comrades who took on the commitment to build
a camp out of season worked. We must say thank you to all those,
movements and individuals, who contributed with the necessary equipment,
to those who sold themselves to Niscemi to participate in the work, to
the local comrades who provided the necessary logistical support.
The garrison was reborn to new life and thanks to a mild climate, it was
possible to carry out the entire program. About a hundred activists
equipped with tents and campers or hosted by comrades from Niscemi
animated the historic place of antimilitarist resistance to the American
presence. Always surrounded by the "loving" attention of the police, the
militants held debates, meetings, work groups, screenings, under the
Sicilian sun of December and January or around the evening fire, with
some important initiatives organized in the village.
Alternative economy, extractivism, women's and gender issues, working
conditions in the agricultural sector of the area, psychology of
liberation, struggles inside and outside Sicily, these are some of the
points around which the planned initiatives took place. There was also
space for a very attended New Year's Eve trek, an involvement of the
scouts, for the restart of the investigation in the village on the
conditions of greatest hardship experienced by the population.
Excellent alternative cuisine worked and there was no shortage of
moments of music and entertainment such as on New Year's Eve with
Menestrella femminista or Pupi di Surfaro day 2, artists who wanted to
contribute to the struggle camp with their presence.
The internationalist dimension characterized the six days of the camp:
Palestine and Rojava were always at the center of general attention.
It should also be noted that a new expulsion order was delivered to a
comrade from Catania on the very eve of the camp. Repression is always
the backdrop to this struggle.
Activists from all over Italy, Valle Susa and Friuli, Lombardy,
Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, etc., converged in Niscemi,
bringing their experiences and comparing them with those of the No Muos
movement. Many young people, but not only, united by the common intent
to strengthen this struggle within the framework of a national
coordination of movements committed against war and militarism.
Certainly, enthusiasm and the desire to do have prevailed over the need
to spend more time on reflection, analysis and comparison on the
situation of general push towards the third world war that we are
experiencing. The presence of many comrades who were attending for the
first time, an objectively positive fact, slowed down the continuity of
the commitments carried out over the years and those decided during the
August camp, such as the creation of two dossiers on repressive laws and
military interference in schools, the issue of health and monitoring of
electromagnetism, the continuation of the questionnaire on the condition
of women in the country. The assembly on January 3, which should have
materialized in a discussion on external and internal war, on overall
strategies and alliances, only partially addressed the topic by moving
the discussion to the concrete prospects linked to maintaining a
presence at the garrison from now until the summer, on the other
practical aspects of such a presence, on the ideas and projects that can
make it happen.
Pragmatism and the need for reflection have not always gone hand in
hand, and perhaps this has disappointed quite a few activists. There
will be time to recover, especially if we are all capable of keeping
alive the main experience that this struggle has handed down: the
coexistence of different positions within very specific common objectives.
There is no doubt that this experience could open a new phase in the No
Muos struggle, a phase in which new subjects burst in, a new generation
that takes up the baton of resistance alongside historical militancy,
bringing with it its own energies and practices that will be triggered
in over a decade of opposition to the American military presence. Today
a bit of confusion is normal, but what counts is the movement's ability
to renew itself and project itself towards new goals.
