The Russian-Ukrainian conflict has finally turned into a hopeless
positional war, and the population is increasingly unwilling to fight. This unwillingness is evidenced by data cited by anti-militarist
anarchists and organizations that help draft dodgers. ---- Despite the
victorious reports of both sides, neither side managed to achieve a
serious change in the situation on the fronts in 2024. The Russian army
managed to conquer about 4 thousand square kilometers during the year,
which is slightly larger than the small German state of Saarland
(https://www.jungewelt.de/artikel/491255.erobern-oder-ersch%C3%B6pfen.html).
At the same time, the Ukrainian army held about 600-800 square
kilometers in the Kursk region by the end of November.

), which is only about a third or a quarter of such a tiny state as
Luxembourg.
According to the data provided by the website of the Kharkiv anarchist
internationalists "Assembly", in November 2024 alone, 18,984 criminal
cases were registered under Articles 407 and 408 of the Criminal Code of
Ukraine (unauthorized abandonment of a unit and desertion). In the
previous month, there were 9,487, and in January 2024 - only 3,448. In
total, from February 2022 to December 1, 2024, 114,280 criminal cases
were opened on such facts. The comrades note that "evasion of military
service still remains a purely personal expression of disagreement,
which does not provide any basis for unification. And yet, there are
changes: if evasion is still associated with some political position,
then this year it is no longer only with "waiting for the Russian
world", but sometimes also with anarchism and cosmopolitanism, which in
2023 was completely exotic."

At the moment, according to Natalia Kindrativ, a representative of the
Communications Department of the Ukrainian Ground Forces Command, more
than half a million Ukrainians are wanted by the police for evading
mobilization
(https://www.ukr.net/ru/news/details/criminal/108934288.html). And a
member of the Ukrainian parliamentary committee on "national security,
defense and intelligence" Oleksandr Fedenko reported that as of October,
about 6 million Ukrainians have not updated their information in
military registration agencies
(https://www.ukr.net/ru/news/details/society/107335918.html).
On the other hand, the anarchist internationalist Telegram channel
"Voice of Anarchists" cites data from Russian organizations involved in
helping those who do not want to go into military service. They report
"the recent increase in the number of mass detentions of potential draft
dodgers in Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Chelyabinsk region and other
regions. Police officers (apparently, having decided to organize a
Russian analogue of "busification") detain people on the streets, in the
metro, at entrances, break into university dormitories and even
apartments. The detainees, often in handcuffs, are taken to military
registration and enlistment offices and assembly points. They try to
conscript those taken to military registration and enlistment offices in
one day, so that relatives do not have time to interfere. Often,
deferments and medical contraindications are not taken into account, and
even people from other regions are called up. The main thing is to
fulfill the conscription plan, which, for example, in Moscow has been
increased to 8,000 sent to the troops. In addition, conscripts are sent
electronic summonses with threats of restrictions and criminal
prosecution (which is a violation of even the state's own formal
procedures)" (https://t.me/voiceofanarchists/1214).
The organizations recorded 170 raids during the autumn draft (90 a year
ago). They mention that conscripts were subjected to unprecedented
pressure and forced by all means to sign documents and put on uniforms:
they were beaten, threatened, and kept without food and water.
Noting that "time will tell which trend will prevail in the near
future," the Kharkov anarchists discuss the prospects for fraternization
of soldiers from opposing armies in the future
