Two years after the state and capitalist crime of Tempi, the anger over
the murder of 57 people on the bloody tracks of economic"reorganization", the memorandum sell-off and the profitability of the
predators of capital has not subsided. The vulgar attacks of defamation
of the dead and their relatives, the brazen government rhetoric that
insists on talking about "accident" and "human errors", the mockery, the
cover-up, the obfuscation and the sound editing, make our anger simmer
daily. ---- The crime of Tempi was predetermined. The railway workers,
noticing the inadequacies, the shortages, the problems in the operation
of the trains every day, had warned through their union bodies that a
tragedy was just around the corner, while they had even predicted the
crocodile tears of the country's political personnel. The responses they
received ranged between indifference and arrogant disparagement, with
Karamanlis' statement under the rostrum of the parliament about the
"shame of raising security issues" being monumental.
The crime of Tempi has those responsible. And these culprits are not
isolated individuals, "invisible centers of power", unsuitable people in
major positions. The advance warning of the crime by the workers
highlights the pre-existing inadequacies in terms of staffing, security
measures and the operating conditions of the railways. These conditions
also reveal the deeper causes. The privatization of the railways to
reduce state spending, their surrender to capital, the degradation of
their operating costs to increase its profitability. The railway
collision in Tempe captures in the most brutal and tragic way the
murderous nature of capitalism and the state. The devaluation of human
life on the altar of profits is not an "aberration" nor a "Greek
peculiarity" nor the responsibility of a minister who "must go to prison
for justice to be served": it is the dominant system, it is capitalism
and the state.
What killed our class brothers was the policy of the state and capital,
the memorandum dictates that all governments followed from 2010 to the
present, was the very core of the socio-economic system that is based on
the enrichment of the few from the work of the many. This system is not
reformed, it cannot be made "fairer". Either it is overthrown or it will
continue to kill us. It would not be enough, therefore, for the
applauded Karamanlides to become Tsochatzopoulos and for the smugglers
who allegedly caused the explosion that killed 30 of the 57 passengers
to be divided into case files in order for justice to be served. This
kind of justice, which now seems distant in light of the new regime's
conditions, would be nothing more than a communicative justice, a
pretextual justice, a supposed justice emanating from the very state
that is responsible for the murders with the aim of alleviating grief
and relieving anger, while simultaneously concealing the structural
causes of the crime. This kind of "justice" cannot constitute a project
for the vindication of the memory of the dead.
Justice for the crime of Tempi is the intensification of social and
class struggles for the revolutionary overthrow of capitalism and the
state. Only we, the overwhelming majority of society that daily
experiences exploitation and injustice in its own skin, on the streets
of resistance, can provide justice. We will not ask the murderers for
justice. We will impose justice by stepping on their heads, directing
our anger towards all representatives of the state and capital.
On Sunday 26/1, this anger of thousands of workers, unemployed,
students, people of all ages, will shape it into a popular torrent that
will flood Syntagma and other squares of the country, responding to the
call of the relatives of the victims of Tempi. This anger, in which
electoral and oppositional capitalization agendas are once again
invested, must be given the political direction that illuminates the
causes and those responsible for the tragedy, that will make it a call
for resistance and class justice: it will make it a precursor of
rebellion. This presupposes a break with the policies that see Tempi as
a flag of opportunity for the "government to fall" and for new
scoundrels to come to the government posts. It is the "politics" of
those who condemned the attacks on Vitsas and Varoufakis during the days
of the magnificent mobilizations for Tempi, demanding that the blood of
Tempi become the glue of ballots in the elections a few months later,
believing in vain in the return to government and the laundering of
those who voted for the sale of OSE along with PASOK, ND and other
relatives.
The political audacity of the opposition and especially the ruling
parties to lie about responsibilities while they first solemnly voted
for the privatization of OSE, should inflame social anger and not give
rise to new illusions. It should also be taken into account that new
players have now been added to the list of micro-political exploitation.
Around Tempi, far-right and national-patriotic populist formations such
as the Greek Solution and the Freedom Voyage are seeking to unite in
order to increase their electoral percentages, while fascists are making
public calls for support. Any thought of implementing the stated
intentions is met with an immediate response.
Two years later, nothing has changed. The organized cover-up, the
disorientation from the guilty, the dismissal of new events that almost
led to a new Tempi due to the unrepentantly murderous policy of the
state and capital should overflow the cup of anger, become fuel for
struggle and rebellion.
