More than 70 people from various Sicilian provinces gathered in Trapani
on the afternoon of June 28th for a protest in front of the Contrada
Milo Repatriation Center. They expressed solidarity with the migrants
detained there and publicly denounced the suffering and restrictions
they endure on a daily basis. In recent months, reports have circulated,
revealing the brutality of prison guards, the lack of cleanliness in the
facility, and the confiscation of mobile phones to prevent inmates from
communicating with people outside the facility. The protesters gathered
in front of the CPR fence to express their solidarity with the detained
migrants, pounding on the metal fences, communicating with them, and
expressing their support for the protests at CPRs across Italy, calling
for their closure, and ensuring that freedom of movement is not tied to
possession of documents and advantageous economic conditions. From
inside the CPR, the detained migrants promptly responded to the voices
and calls from outside, saying they were living in inhumane conditions,
some for many months, without receiving information about their
detention times. They asked for contact with people in solidarity, and
thanked those who participated in the protest and reached the fence to
express their solidarity with all the detainees. CPR inmates also
enlivened the protest with collective pounding. To further communicate
and share solidarity with the migrants during the protest, several
recorded voice messages, microphone interventions, and music pieces
chosen by participants and detained migrants were broadcast from a sound
system brought to the site and aimed at the walls of the detention facility.
