Salut à Toots ! Cette semaine, ça bouge fort dans votre club de jazz préféré. Après notre blitz hebdomadaire du mardi, invité spécial pour la jam du mercredi avec le saxophoniste alto Matt Chalk. Une jam à prix libre, et clairement à ne pas manquer. Jeudi, Anne Wolf viendra en duo avec Theo de Jong pour l’after work. On enchaîne ensuite avec le rendez-vous trimestriel de celles et ceux qui vous font sourire du début à la fin de leurs concerts : le quatuor vocal (et instrumental) The Morning Call. Un moment toujours magnifique. Invité de marque les 13 et 14 février pour la Saint-Valentin. Nous accueillons en trio le guitariste et chanteur Femi Temowo, Britannique né au Nigeria. Parmi ses faits d’armes musicaux, il fut l’accompagnateur et directeur artistique de Amy Winehouse durant plusieurs années, ainsi que compagnon de scène de George Benson. Excusez du peu ! Quatre sets en deux jours, aucune excuse pour le rater, d’autant plus qu’il est très rare en Belgique. Pour finir la semaine, Vincent Thekal et Casimir Liberski s’attaquent au répertoire de l’immense John Coltrane. Le soir, place à la deuxième soirée carte blanche pour l’inégalable et génial Erik Vermeulen, qui jouera des standards en compagnie de Géraud Portal et de son éternel complice Malek Patrman. Na onze wekelijkse blitz op dinsdag is er een speciale gast voor de jam op woensdag met altsaxofonist Matt Chalk. Een jam aan vrije bijdrage, en absoluut niet te missen. Op donderdag speelt Anne Wolf in duo met Theo de Jong voor de afterwork-set. Daarna volgt het driemaandelijkse rendez-vous van de muzikanten die je van begin tot einde doen glimlachen: het vocale (en instrumentale) kwartet The Morning Call. Altijd een prachtig moment. Speciale gast op 13 en 14 februari, ideaal voor Valentijn. We ontvangen in trio gitarist en zanger Femi Temowo, Brits met Nigeriaanse roots. Tot zijn indrukwekkende muzikale parcours behoort onder meer zijn rol als begeleider en muzikaal directeur van Amy Winehouse gedurende meerdere jaren, evenals zijn samenwerking met George Benson. Niet mis. Vier sets in twee dagen — geen enkel excuus om dit te missen, zeker omdat hij zeldzaam te zien is in België. Om de week af te sluiten duiken Vincent Thekal en Casimir Liberski in het repertoire van de immense John Coltrane. ’s Avonds volgt de tweede carte blanche-avond van de onovertroffen Erik Vermeulen, die standards speelt samen met Géraud Portal en zijn trouwe kompaan Malek Patrman. After our weekly Tuesday blitz, we welcome a special guest for Wednesday’s jam with alto saxophonist Matt Chalk. A pay-what-you-want jam, and definitely not to be missed. On Thursday, Anne Wolf performs in duo with Theo de Jong for the after-work set. We then continue with the quarterly rendez-vous of the musicians who make you smile from the first note to the last: the vocal (and instrumental) quartet The Morning Call. Always a beautiful moment. Special guest on February 13 and 14, just in time for Valentine’s Day. We welcome in trio the guitarist and singer Femi Temowo, British-born with Nigerian roots. Among his many musical achievements, he was the accompanist and musical director of Amy Winehouse for several years, and a longtime collaborator of George Benson. Not bad at all. Four sets over two days — no excuse to miss him, especially as he is rarely seen in Belgium. To close the week, Vincent Thekal and Casimir Liberski take on the repertoire of the immense John Coltrane. In the evening, it’s time for the second carte blanche night by the incomparable Erik Vermeulen, playing standards with Géraud Portal and his longtime partner Malek Patrman. See you soon at Toots.

Nostalgia In Grand-Place : John Coltrane - Tribute dimanche 15 février - 16:00 Vincent Thekal (ts) ; Casimir Liberski (p) ; Grigoris Theodoridis (b) ; Gabriel Moraes (dr) One of the most important and influential figures in the history of jazz, John Coltrane embodies innovation and excellence. After beginning his career on alto saxophone alongside Dizzy Gillespie and rubbing shoulders with the leading figures of bebop, it was on the tenor saxophone that he forged his legend. A member of Miles Davis’ first great quintet, he took part in the recording of Kind of Blue. Released in 1959, Giant Steps pushed bebop harmony to its limits and marked the beginning of a series of revolutionary albums. Coltrane gradually developed a unique musical language, combining absolute freedom, modal jazz, and breathtaking chord progressions. Vincent Thekal has chosen to pay tribute to this giant as part of our Nostalgia In Grand Place series. More info

Erik Vermeulen Invites - BELGIAN JAZZ LEGEND dimanche 15 février - 20:00 Erik Vermeulen (p) ; Géraud Portal (b) ; Marek Patrman (b) Among the remarkable pool of jazz pianists in Belgium, there is one who is admired by all and who has taught almost everyone — both in the conservatories where he lectured and during summer workshops. His deep knowledge of harmony has opened up new worlds for countless musicians. I am, of course, speaking of Erik Vermeulen. We are delighted to present a series of Sunday evening concerts in which he invites various musicians to share two sets, allowing his all-too-discreet genius to unfold before your amazed eyes and attentive ears. For this edition, he is joined by the brilliant French bassist Géraud Portal and his long-time partner, the hyper-creative and deeply musical Malek Patrman. More info
