Team LGBTQ continues to grow

When we first published our Team LGBTQ list for the Milan Winter Olympics, 41 out LGBTQ athletes were set to compete. That number is now 47, and it's still growing.

Milan includes historic firsts. Amber Glenn is the first publicly out LGBTQ woman in Olympic figure skating history and one of Team USA's top medal hopes. Sweden's Elis Lundholm is the first publicly identified trans athlete at a Winter Olympics. And 22 out women are playing ice hockey, making it the sport with the most LGBTQ representation.

For many athletes, visibility matters. Glenn told us that coming out allowed her to bring her full self onto the ice.

U.S. speedskater Conor McDermott-Mostowy, who earned his first Olympic berth after missing the team in 2022, wanted to prove that gay men can excel in sports. French figure skater Kevin Aymoz said coming out publicly allowed him to remove a bandage he'd been wearing for years. "There's no wound anymore," he said. "It made me feel good."

The list continues to grow because this is ongoing reporting. We search social media across countries and languages, review interviews, and reach out to athletes directly. Some are highly visible. Others are out to teammates and followers but haven't done formal media.
