Here we are again. We resume publication after the usual weeks of hiatus, but the struggles have continued unabated amid the growing authoritarian and militaristic grip. Fines, complaints, evictions. These are the gifts exchanged between the government and employers, along with magistrates and opposition parties. The fines ranging from EUR2,500 to EUR20,000 that hit the trade unions that called for the general strike on October 3, deemed illegitimate by the Commission for the Implementation of the Strike Law. The hundreds of complaints and criminal convictions delivered from North to South for participation in last fall's movement in solidarity with the Global Sumud Flotilla, particularly for blockades at ports, train stations, and on roads. The repressive operation that, starting in Genoa, targeted Palestinian individuals and associations on charges of terrorism, clearly aimed at weakening and criminalizing Palestinian organizations in Italy. The eviction of the Askatasuna social center in Turin and the announcement of a widespread repressive attack on social spaces: official media reported a list of 200 spaces to be cleared, while Salvini announced evictions in Turin, Milan, Rome, and... Livorno.
These repressive measures affect different contexts, each with its own limitations and contradictions, but each in its own way poses a problem for those in power. The wide variety of those affected and the diversity of the measures demonstrate how the repressive attack is widespread and sets important precedents that threaten other struggles as well. The instrument of the strike is being targeted, a large movement will be brought to trial for the first time, perhaps with the application of the new, more severe penalties for road and rail blockades, association-type structures are being targeted, and-this is nothing new-the movement's infrastructure is being targeted, with the threat of closing down numerous social spaces.
The significance of this repressive attack is clear. As international tensions continue to escalate, the Italian government wants to make it clear that it is willing to endure even more extensive repression to pursue a war for a new division of the world in this time of crisis and redefinition of imperialist balances globally. Consider the US attacks in Nigeria and Venezuela, as well as the rapid militarization of Europe, which not only continues to fuel the war in Ukraine but is also increasingly preparing for war with tightening conscription restrictions in many countries and reorganizing production and public services to accommodate the climate of war. We must build a response capable of turning the tide and halting governments' rush to war and social devastation day by day, starting with solidarity networks and internationalism. We see social and political tensions rekindling within the US itself with the mobilization against ICE and the murder of Renee Good by agents in Minneapolis. Just as we have seen the rapidly growing popular uprising in Iran.
These eight pages are obviously not enough to address what has happened during the few weeks of publication hiatus. But thanks to the contributions of several comrades, we have tried to offer discussion points and tools for struggle that can help us navigate this moment. Not so much to try to guess what the world's masters will do next, but to continue together on the path of social liberation.
