WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE FRANCE - news journal UPDATE - (en) France, UCL: Anti-imperialism - "The Path to Freedom, " a film about the struggles of the Ukrainian left (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Their war is anti-fascist, against the destruction of their rights, against the plundering, pillaging, and military occupation of their country by Putin. Feminists, environmentalists, trade unionists, anarchists, they have chosen active and armed resistance, readily referring to Nestor Makhno. Not the Makhno portrayed as a patriot by Ukrainian nationalists, but the internationalist and revolutionary Makhno he truly was. The documentary film by Pierre Chamechaude and Christophe Cordier, screening from February 20, 2026, tells the story of this anti-authoritarian Ukraine that refuses to be silenced.

Their names are Serhii, Alyssa, Salam, Olessia, Lesha, and Katara; They are Ukrainian, of course, but, like so many other comrades-Russian, Belarusian, and of other nationalities-they have chosen armed resistance against Putin.

Ukraine is clearly engaged in a liberation struggle against Russian imperialism and logically draws upon figures from its recent history to resonate with its current situation. Among these figures, Nestor Makhno occupies a unique place. A little over a century ago, he fought against two Russian imperialisms: that of the Tsarist armies and that of the Bolshevik armies.

In this current atrocious war, the question of a solution that liberates the Ukrainian people from the yoke of their neighbor and from neoliberalism, whose devastating effects are well known, is also at stake. What is at stake in this conflict is not only the military question of territorial control but also that of a genuine attempt at emancipation for the Ukrainian people from all forms of oppression.

The directors
Christophe Cordier and Pierre Chamechaude have known each other for over twenty years through their involvement in the social movement and have long shared their interest in the figure of Nestor Makhno.

Pierre Chamechaude is the author or co-author of books on anarchism in the Russian Revolution (1917: The Anarchists, Their Role, Their Choices (Alternative Libertaire), the social movement, and Ukraine (Ukraine in Full, Syllepse). He has also published, under the name Pierre Znamensky, several works on propaganda arts in the Soviet system: Under the Folds of the Red Flag (Le Rouergue) and Sovietart (Galilée).

Christophe Cordier is the author of numerous social and historical documentaries. He pays particular attention to focusing on the men and women who resist various forms of oppression in their own way, as seen, for example, in his films Class Brothers and On Strike, about the 2019-2020 rail strike. His camera has often been set in foreign territories: in Peru with The Lost Dream of the River Men, in Chiapas with Los Vigilantes, and in Palestine with Counterfires.
