He shuffled slowly towards the main train station. At least the drug took effect slowly, bringing with it a comforting warmth that, independent of other people, lasted at least for the moment. The transformation of the cityscape hadn't happened overnight. For the first few years, one could muddle through the increasing displacement.
Being homeless in full view of shoppers was initially tolerated. Begging, however, was already frowned upon. Who wants their shopping experience marred by such disgusting, stinking poverty? It's supposed to be fun. People like him had no place there. With the harsher tone in the press and politics came the violence. Not just from law enforcement. Even the otherwise law-abiding citizen quickly felt compelled to take matters into their own hands. Kick someone who's just hanging around. They should be working.But the years passed, and the measures to suppress the population were intensified. More flickering lights in the darkness. More insults, fines, batons.
Since last year, people have only been allowed to be in the city for the sole purpose of consuming goods from the shops. Drone surveillance led to immediate police intervention if anyone dared to loiter on the cold ground of the shopping street, which drove poverty back into the unheated containers.
